Object: Any good giftshops in Mecca?
My best friend is going to Mecca at the end of April. It's not the
official pilgrimage, but some sort of semi-traditional test run (I told
Liz it sounds like something thought up to bring travelers in durring
the off season). Anyways, does anyone know if there's any interesing
souvenirs from there I can have her get me? I already told her to be on
the lookout for a tshirt that says "My friend's going to Islamic
heaven, and all I got was a lousy tshirt".

Is your best friend a Muslim? Last I heard only Muslims who were
certified as being Muslim by the Saudi govt could go to Mecca. Maybe
that has changed, and they're welcoming "kufr" (infidel) tourists in
order to prop up the local economy.

Yes, she's a Muslim. I assumed that was a given :)

An unaccompanied woman going to Mecca?! Hope she's over 40, or got a
male relative accompanying her, else there will be trouble!

She's going with her mother and sister, and it seems to be an orginized
tour. They had to turn in their passports over a month in advance,
meaning her sister has to get a temporary one to go on another trip in
a week or two.

Yes. Those are quite funny. They must remember to say "Uncle" to the
tour leader....

My wife is a Muslim, and is off there for the next Hajj, so I've
looked into it in some detail. Remember the meningitis and other
inoculations. And to keep to the side in tunnels. Serious medical
insurance *which is valid in Saudi* is a must.
Still, they seem to enjoy it, perhaps rather more than I enjoy
Glastonbury, or Tintagel Castle. Still, each to their own.
