Anyone Hungry? |

Atheist n A person to be pitied in that he is
unable to believe things for which there is
no evidence, and who has thus deprived himself of
a convenient means of feeling superior to others.

I wondered about that--some of the recipes *sounded* good, but the
accompanying pictures looked as if the stuff had already been eaten and
had made an unexpected reappearance... *Don't* look at the picture for
Italian Fried Rice. Trust me!

LOL - Aw, that wasn't too bad.
You know what looks bad? The nasty crap my husband and bro-in-law threw in
for breakfast after I made them pancakes and sausage links. They took all
the meat leftover from dinner last night (3 ribs with sauce, a big piece of
steak and a couple of grilled sausages), threw them in a pan and heated them
up in the pan I had cooked the sausage links. They also cooked themselves a
couple of fried eggs as well. Blech :P

It sounds a bit like an attempted mixed grill, not too disgusting for
a carnivore, which I still am, more or less. Less, lately.
Now, if they'd poured a batter over it and baked it for a half hour,
it would have been toad-in-the-hole. :) That's a great way to use up
meat scraps. It's also made with sausages, if meat scraps are lacking.
I've also seen a vegetarian version with portabella mushrooms. Saute
them first. Add a few red and yellow peppers to the saute. Some sweet
onion--Golly! Now I'm hungry again!

Ah, maybe. My only real problems have been putting on weight and

Do you grind them up? I've made veggie-burgers with ground mushrooms
and TVP, (also made spaghetti sauce that way) but I've also seen the big
portabella caps grilled whole and used that way. Grilled gill side
down, flipped and filled with a dollop of shredded jack cheese that
melts while the other side grills.

I have a glass of red wine with dinner, as it does seem to be
helping lower the old blood pressure. I mostly just get the hot
flashes at night now, not too much hassle there. My mother, on

stripping off her clothing like an amateur ecdysiast, no matter

I always try to provide a choice. One of the first things I
ask anyone I've invited to dinner is food preferences--I want to
know if someone is vegetarian, or allergic to wheat, or hates
cilantro, and I want to know well ahead of time. Gotten some

Well, I'm the only vegetarian I know, so I make sure I've got myself
covered - I've gotten used to having to bring my own food sometimes (i.e.,
veggie burger or marinated portabella to a cook-out). I did bring a
vegetarian bean dish to a cookout on the 4th and a couple people tried it

I have a glass of red wine with dinner, as it does seem to be
helping lower the old blood pressure. I mostly just get the hot
flashes at night now, not too much hassle there. My mother, on
the other hand, would get hers in the afternoons, and start
stripping off her clothing like an amateur ecdysiast, no matter
where she was or who she was with. At this point I suspect she
was just after attention. And got it. :/
LOL! Oh my! Someone I work with told me that his wife's mom got them so
badly that her glasses would get all steamed up! Dang.
Yikes! That *is* bad. I generally stay very still and count
seconds, because I know that they only last about two minutes.
Makes it bearable, if you know when it's going to end.
Only two minutes? You're lucky. My last for about a half hour. At least
they're less frequent than they used to be ;P
Two minutes now, about fifteen to twenty when they first
started. I just realized, I've been having them for about ten
years. YIKES!
<snip>
Well, I'm the only vegetarian I know, so I make sure I've got myself
covered - I've gotten used to having to bring my own food sometimes (i.e.,
veggie burger or marinated portabella to a cook-out). I did bring a
vegetarian bean dish to a cookout on the 4th and a couple people tried it
and liked it.
I think that most people have entirely the wrong idea about
vegetarian cooking, as if vegetarians lived entirely on boiled
green beans or something. As the meat prices keep going up,
we're becoming more (involuntary) vegetarians ourselves. And
the way that the vegetable prices have been going up, I'm going
to have to convert more of my tiny yard to food production. :/
Do you ever make kebabs? I had
some grilled eggplant (not usually a favorite vegetable of mine)
and mushroom kebabs once that were great. Also marinated first,
I think, then grilled and served with couscous.

My wife and I have an herb garden, plus a
reasonably size vegetable garden. Herbs include
oregano, sage, thyme, lovage, tarragon, marjoram,
lemon balm, parsley, chocolate mint, basil,
coriander, fennel, dill, chamomile, feverfew,
marshmallow root, licorice, pleurisy root (grown
as much for the pretty clusters of orange flowers
as for any other reason), ginger, and stevia,
plus a few whose use only my wife could tell you.
:)
The veggie garden is standard stuff: peas (which
my wife eats right off the vine, and none make it
to the kitchen), carrots, spinach, several
lettuces, garlic, onion, rhubarb, cucumber, a
couple types of melons, pumpkin, tomato, peanuts,
corn, potatoes and butternut squash.
I also have an small apple tree, three blueberry
bushes, a small plot of seedless blackberries,
plus wild blackberries near the wood line.
Now I've gone and made myself hungry. ;-)

Except for the herbs, the gardens lie within
fences. There are too many resident rabbits, for
one thing, and the groundhogs (woodchucks) and
deer would mow everything down in a few days if
the plants weren't protected.
Still, the more intrepid creatures are not
deterred: some summers we realize that the corn
is ripe by the fact that a raccoon has scaled the
fend and helped himself to a few ears. ;-)

Chicken wire will foil those buggers, especially if you fold
the bottom 6 inches outward along the ground. Works for
rabbits, too. Won't work on squirrels, though. Little buggers
got all my strawberries.
The old woodchuck here, that used to strip every plant in my

Oh please, I hear that almost every day. They're usually bitching at a

lost her tail - looked like due to some kind of accident or perhaps a run in

We now have two: an older veteran groundhog and a
baby groundhog.
There is also a rabbit who, because he born under
the pine tree in the back yard, has been near us
since he was old enough to emerge from his hole.
So he doesn't startle when we get near, doesn't
run, but instead gives us a "You're not going to
mow the lawn now, not while I'm eating here, are

Cute! I still haven't seen ours around in while. I know my elder feline
has been taking her toll on the local wildlife lately, but I think a big
groundhog is a bit out of her league ;)

How adorable! We had a baby rabbit that lived in our backyard for a while.
He was SO tiny! Looked way too tiny to be off on his own, but there he was.
We weren't letting my old cat outside at that point and I made sure the
neighbor's cats stayed away as best I could. My daughter named him "Mr.
Whuggums". He eventually did grow up and moved out. The few times he
scared the crap out of my husband by running out of the shed were priceless
;)

Awww, cute! It's weird, here. We seem to have two

and the back yard ones are big, fat, and sassy with glossy coats

with a cat. I was afraid it was getting infected, but she showed up this
morning and it looks a lot better. She looks like a minature capybara.
Of
course, I named her "Stumpy".
Awww, cute!
I doubt poor Stumpy would agree. But she's feisty and doing okay so far :)
It's weird, here. We seem to have two
populations of squirrels, front yard and back yard. The front
yard ones are smaller, and have ratty moth-eaten looking tails,
and the back yard ones are big, fat, and sassy with glossy coats
and big, full, fluffy tails.
Hmm, that's weird. We have a bit of a mix, though most of them look pretty
decent with the exception of the aforementioned Stumpy and another female
squirrel who has half a tail.
This morning I saw a road-kill fox, about a half a block away.
Now, that made me really sad.
That would make me very sad as well. I saw a HUGE coyote along the side
of
a local highway recently. Poor thing.
Oh, bugger. I really hate discovering the diversity of local
wildlife through road-kills. I haven't seen any coyotes here,
but I've heard them sometimes, and seen they're scats. And the
neighbor behind us lost her two free-range cats.
Several little pampered dogs have disappeared out of backyards locally. My
daughter's school had an emergency shutdown when a small pack showed up on
the grounds early one afternoon. And not too long ago, a coyote tried taking
off with a one-year-old child!

Yeah, so do we. I was hearing this weird quacking noise the
other day, like a rundown duck--turned out to be a squirrel
cussing at me. I'd never had one do that before.
Oh please, I hear that almost every day. They're usually bitching at a
neighbor's cat. We've got this one poor little female squirrel that

Yikes, indeed! I was at a zoo once, looking at a very bored
snow leopard that was stretched out on a branch. He was all
languid, then quite suddenly his ears came forward, and he
tensed into the pounce position. I looked around and saw that a
lone toddler had just strayed into sight. You could just see
the cat thinking, "Ah, prey! At last!" The really scary thing
was that only one or two other people even noticed or realized
what happened there. Of course, the leopard couldn't actually
*get* to the baby, but I just kept thinking about how many
people nowadays haul their kids out camping without even a
vestigial idea that the universe is *not* a friendly place.

We have a couple of tomato plants, as well as some basil
and oregano, but that's about it.
My wife and I have an herb garden, plus a
reasonably size vegetable garden. Herbs include
oregano, sage, thyme, lovage, tarragon, marjoram,
lemon balm, parsley, chocolate mint, basil,
coriander, fennel, dill, chamomile, feverfew,
marshmallow root, licorice, pleurisy root (grown
as much for the pretty clusters of orange flowers
as for any other reason), ginger, and stevia,
plus a few whose use only my wife could tell you.
:)
Oh, good on ya! When I lived in CA I had over a hundred
varieties of herbs in a standard housing tract yard. I really
miss being able to grow rosemary in the ground, and lemon
verbena, too. I had tarragon for a while, but it fizzled out--
it's only borderline hardy here. I do have peppermint,
feverfew, and sweet woodruff, though, and tons of wild
strawberries, as well as four "tame" ones.
The veggie garden is standard stuff: peas (which
my wife eats right off the vine, and none make it
to the kitchen), carrots, spinach, several
lettuces, garlic, onion, rhubarb, cucumber, a
couple types of melons, pumpkin, tomato, peanuts,
corn, potatoes and butternut squash.
<sigh> Excuse me while I go all envious for a bit.
I also have an small apple tree, three blueberry
bushes, a small plot of seedless blackberries,
plus wild blackberries near the wood line.
I used to grow blackberries, both seedless/thornless and one
that was both seeded and *thorny*. The latter had the best
flavor, enough to make the seeds and thorns worth it. I just
don't have the room here. I'd like to grow currants, but they
can't be shipped to Maine. Nor gooseberries. I looked into
blueberries, but again it came down to room. I am thinking
about a couple of dwarf apples, maybe the columnar ones.
Now I've gone and made myself hungry. ;-)
Me too!
