Apes to Man |
Ok, this stupid debate has gone on for an Eon.Can we please just have some
scientist make a new primate race that can talk?
I mean everyone knows evolution made us; can't we just use some kinda of
experimental DNA enhancements and make a "new man" from the most evolved
monkey? You know, there's no rules about monkey research.
Screw cancer, there's too many kinds to count. Forget AIDS, it'll take care
of itself. Let's make a new humanoid from a monkey and put Religion in its
place!

When you hunt an animal, it is the spirit of that animal that allows
you to catch it. When you eat that animal, its spirit passes into
you. The Creator arranged things this way so that all spirits could
experience life in all its forms. Death is just a passing from one
form to another. The spirit, in passing through life and gaining great
knowledge, seeks final union with The Creator, the maker of all things.

When my nephew died, my sister's sister-in-law (? my brother-in law's
brother's wife) told her that he was in hell and it was her fault.
She became a born-again a few years after she married my
brother-in-law's brother. He's religious but OK.
Some of them are sick. But what's worse, is they can't understand the
normal human reaction to this nastiness. And that makes it worse.
I don't know who are worse - the ones that don't realise how nasty
they are, and those who do it to be nasty.

It's not going to be this year. You're not really up on the current
state of technology, are you? Quite a few genetic engineers are
theists; why would they want to "put religion in its place"? How would
enhanced chimps do that, anyway?
It will eventually be done, of course. The results will not
necessarily be good. Suppose, for instance, they can understand
speech, but are not as bright as we are, on the average. Will they be
enslaved?
Will it be murder to kill one? Not a good situation. But like atomic
bombs, the technology will eventually be so trivial that someone,
somewhere, will do it. We *will want to enhance humans soon. But I
would hope that we will test the techniques on non-humans first. I am
not entirely comfortable with this.
But the importance of having smarter humans is too profound to ignore.
This too, will be done sooner or later, and perhaps it is best done
with many eyes watching. Or maybe not.

Making talking monkeys means it is possible for evolution to work. Evolution
is genetic engineering, the slow way. Religious "minded" people say it can't
happen - "Where are the evolved monkeys?" they say. Let's make some!
