It's a satire piece, but that's the web site of the
journal "Nature" which, along with "Science", is
one of the two most prestigious journals in science.
And I might even have bought into it, if they had
scaled the silliness down by a factor of 100 or
so. And the reason for that is the increasing
conviction among many geochemists that many
phenomena we always though were purely physical
or chemical -- rusting, the laying down of
ore deposits, cave formation, and a whole
host of suprising others -- may well be
mediated by bacteria. Out on the, well,
"cold fusion" end of this spectrum of thought
are the researchers into nanobacteria, who
suspect that some bacteria may be both far
smaller, far more ubiquitous, and far
more signifacant than more conentional
microbiologists and geologists believe.
