One notion that I've encountered several times recently is that atheists
should have a right to maintain their beliefs and be free from pressures in
school and elsewhere to subscribe to other beliefs. Sometimes this is
accompanied by a positive affirmation of atheists' tolerant stance towards
devotees of various religions. In other words, the implication is that
atheists do not seek to prevent others from believing what they will, so
long as atheists are not compelled to accept or pretend to accept those
beliefs, in contrast with what has been the case in previous centuries.
