The State of Arizona has seized control of the public schools in
Colorado City and Hildate, towns that are owned and run by Mormon
cultists whose leader is on the lam from federal prosecution for
numerous crimes, including sex crimes against minors.

Note that these are not "Mormons" but an offshoot of the "official"
Mormon faith. They both have their faults but the people in Colorado
City are real creeps.

Why would the state of Arizona take over the schools of " Hildate"
(Hildale) that is in Utah? Is there some sort of Civil War going on?

Sounds as though this particular school district straddles the state line.
---excerpt from the new article---
The state Board of Education on Monday invoked a new Arizona law for the
first time by approving the financial takeover of a school district in a
secluded community dominated by a polygamist sect.
The board voted 8-1 to approve a settlement between the Colorado City
Unified School District and state officials to immediately place the
district under the financial oversight of an appointed receiver.
Colorado City and neighboring Hildale, Utah, are dominated by the
Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a sect that
practices polygamy and broke away from the mainline LDS Church.

Strange. I go through there for the beautiful desert scenery and it's

School districts are usually county things not state things.

The State oversees standards for education but perhaps in this case
the State was also concerned with the inability of the local district
cleaning up the crime and corruption -- since the local district is
part of the crimes and corruption.

Actually, the nearest city of any size is Kanab, UT.

Kanab ain't of any size. At 4,500 people it is only slightly larger
than Colorado City. St. George is around 66,000 people.

Sounds as though this particular school district straddles the state line.

School districts are usually county things not state things. This part
of Arizona is cut off from the rest of the state by the Grand Canyon
the only all year roads have to go through Utah. The closest city of
any size to both Colorado City and Hildale is St. George, Utah. I went
through there around 2 years ago. Colorado City is strange. Very large
houses with lots of windows widely scattered. Little business. Hildale
seem a normal small desert town. Hildale was once the center for
Fundamentalist Mormons but the state of Utah cracked down so the
Mormons moved south across the border into Arizona. If you are
interested in this topic read. "Under the Banner of heaven" by Jon
Krakauer. One of the most interesting books I've read in a long time.
Reading this book prompted my trip to this area.

The head cult leader is still being hidden by his followers -- which
is apparently acceptable since aiding a wanted fugitive felon is just
"man's laws" and isn't condemned in the Christian mythologies.

There are communities of Fundamentalist Mormons in both Canada and
Mexico. Perhaps these folks can move to Europe where multiple spouses
are recognized.
