I think Arnold really needs to be a lot more specific. If he's talking about
silent, voluntary, individual prayer then no one is going to have a problem. If
he's talking about open, mandatory group prayer mandated by the government then
he has a very serious ethical problem.
Increasing the power of government is certainly NOT a conservative principle.
Someone should remind him of that.

The context in which he used the phrase "prayer in school" really seems to
lean towards the school-sanctioned variety. The way he uses "it should be up
to the schools.....what religion they belong and what direction they want to
go" gives away his opinion that the school should decide what kind of prayer
goes on....as if a primarily-Christian school would have the option of
sanctioning a Christian prayer.

Agreed. I read it the same way. He must have been talking about parochial
schools. The problem there is that they also receive tax monies. If you
allow them to discriminate WRT their religious preference, they should
forfeit their tax allotment.
I went to a Catholic high school (oddly enough), and because of the tax
situation, there was no *requirement* to participate in prayer there but it
was openly practiced, officially endorsed, and Christian. I was considered
Catholic then, and ironically the excellent education I received was the
very seed of my religious undoing. Praise the IPU (PBUHHH) !!

So , really, which direction should a public school go?
Here is a suggestion:
We take 5 steps to the right because we have 800 Hindus attending the
school
We descend by 60 steps where it becomes a bit hotter b/c we have 300
Jews
We climb 10,000 steps up the ladder but fall because the ladder turned
out to be too short to account for all the Christians.

Which works fine for a little backwater protestant town in a rural area,
population 1500. I'm surprised he doesn't understand the melting-pot
situation in large cities like Los Angeles, or Sacramento, where it is
quite common for there to be a representation of Jewish, Muslim and Hindu
children, not to mention an atheist or two.
Shame on you, Arnold. There goes my vote.
