If you're an atheist because of the Pope -- or any other
religious authority -- you're not an atheist. You're just
bitter.
Some people have no sense of self, and define themselves
entirely in terms of who or what they're not.
Sometimes it's more a case of wishful thinking, defining
themselves in terms of what they wish they weren't.
Examples of this would be poor white trash attributing
their own faults to racial minorities, or repressed gay
people who are rabid homophobes.

Insightful observation. And the same goes for theists who define
themselves in terms of who or what they are not--e.g, atheists,
agnostics, Jews, Catholics, Mormons, JW's, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus,
whatever.

I think you need to crawl back under your rock til it's over, and maybe
while you're there do a little google search on the man or read a few
news articles. One thing he did was that helped the solitarity movement
in Poland and thus helped to bring down Communism. Through the
struggles of his own life (losing his family by the age of 20), living
under the Nazis and then later under Communism, fighting numerous
illnesses and insisting on carrying on with his work despite all the
wishes of his doctors, by trying to reach out to other religions, by
showing himself to be a human being even while preaching fairly strict
morals that I don't share with him, I think he showed hyimself to be an
incredible person. There aren't too many of those in the world. I
personally draw great strength from the example of someone who always
realised that you have nothing if you don't have some conviction, some
beleif in some set of things you hold true and beleive are worth
fighting for and standing up for. You don't have to share the same
beleif he did to be able to admire the man's conviction. Likewise, what
I like about him is his acceptance of pain, especially in her own life.
The guy's suffered pretty badly between one thing and another for the
past twenty years, not least getting shot. That's pretty damn
impressive I think.
I think it's clear that as an atheist you feel intimidated by this guy.
You think you can simply pretend he has no merit or no significance.
Find out what the man said and did, acknowledge the powerful aspects,
don't throw the baby out with the bath-water. Above all else, don't be

Letting all the insults go for the moment (crikey, what did I ever do to

a) Solidarity movement in Poland (his own country - so kind of a vested
interest, no?)
b) He struggled under nazis and communists (so did most Poles)
c) He was sick a lot & kept working (like he had a choice)
d) Strict morals & convictions (Most of which I vehemently disagree with)
Now the bits you didn't mention:
e) Ignoring the Aids crisis and not allowing condoms to be used for disease
prevention.
f) Marginalizing women in the home and in the church.
g) Encouraging women to die in childbirth rather than either use
contraception or abortion.

You acted like a hateful little fool. As an atheist, I don't like
getting a bad name from the actions of people like you.
To summarize your points:
a) Solidarity movement in Poland (his own country - so kind of a
vested
interest, no?)
He doesn't deserve credit for supporting the solidary movement of
Poland simply because he came from there? I dunno if you wantched the
news yesterday, but the Polish President and Lech Walesa both credited
him as having been vital to the cause of Polish freedom.
b) He struggled under nazis and communists (so did most Poles)
So you give him a little credit then?
c) He was sick a lot & kept working (like he had a choice)
Pick up a dictionary. Look up the word "resign". He had a choice.
d) Strict morals & convictions (Most of which I vehemently disagree
with)
And me, dopey. But I'm the one who has the tollerence to admire that
the man had conviction.
Now the bits you didn't mention:
e) Ignoring the Aids crisis and not allowing condoms to be used for
disease
prevention.
f) Marginalizing women in the home and in the church.
g) Encouraging women to die in childbirth rather than either use
contraception or abortion.
All true. That's the downside of the man. The difference between you
and me is that I'm not a bigot ignoring the upside.
and, by the way, I am grown up.
You've been hanging around too many creationists I fear. You seem to
have abandoned evidence and settled for unsupported assertion.
Sorry if you took my question so personally. I didn't realise he was
your
best friend.
This is the kind of logical leap a creationist would make. 'Oh you
didn't hate the guy? He must be you best friend' comes from the exact
same line of reasoning as 'You don't beleive in my God? So you condone
murder and rape'.

The mood in Catholic Poland just now is like Britain after the death of Princess
Di - total mass hysteria. No Polish leader can do anything other than flow with
the tide.
Did East Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia
all break free under his inspiration? Is it just coincidence that Poland broke
free of the eastern block at the same time? The eastern block and the USSR
whould have fallen with or without JP II. The same is unlikely to be true of
Walesa, Gorbachev, and Yeltsin.
And before I too get branded as an anti-Catholic bigot, compare and contrast the
achievements of Pope John XXIII with JP II. By that I mean real achievements:
movements that he started and changes that would not have taken place without
him. John XXIII achieved more in a few years than JP II did in two and half
decades.
JP II said a lot of fine words about peace and unity, but when it came to the
things that he actually had control over, such as the Vatican's opposition to
condoms, gay and women's rights, his record was an absolute disgrace. Then
there's his reaction to the paedophile priest scandal: rewarding one of its
worst culprits with a plush job in Rome.
The hysteria surrounding JP II's death is due to the image that he and others
have built up for him. Look at the facts, including his role in the fall of
communism, it was far more limited than his hero-worshippers and apologists
would have you believe.

Reagan used the Vatican and the RCC as a conduit for materials to
destabilise the Jaruzelski government. The price was that US overseas
aid follow the Vatican line over birth control and abortion.
The chuch was used for acts of treason (in the eyes of the government
that was overthrown), backed by two other another counties (the US and
the Vatican).
Both Popes and US Presidents think they have some kind of divine right
to interfere in other people's countries.
Imagine the government reaction if that happened here. Led by an
American citizen living in a foreign country.
Would that be the government persecuting on the church, or cracking
down on dissent?

First off, there is no such thing as "Communism" with a capital C.
Second, his part in the downfall of the Polish regime was to be pope and

Third, he presided over the world's largest hierarchical, patriarchal, and

He visited as many countries as he could in an effort to consolidate his own
power, not just Poland (and it would only make sense that he go to Poland at
least a few times), and speaking out against oppression is the absolute
minimum we should expect out of anybody, much less the leader of the world's

CNN has reported that the pope is dead. Good riddance.
Ummm... what did he do?
I don't know - can anyone tell me what the pope did that was
so
wonderful
that we have had nothing but pope death watch for days now?
And anyway, there will be another one along in a few days.
I think you need to crawl back under your rock til it's over,
and
maybe
while you're there do a little google search on the man or read
a
few
news articles. One thing he did was that helped the solitarity
movement
in Poland and thus helped to bring down Communism.
First off, there is no such thing as "Communism" with a capital
C.
Thanks to JPII, among others.
No, Communism with a capital C never existed at all.
Second, his part in the downfall of the Polish regime was to be
pope
and
Polish simultaneously.
You make it sound like he sat on his throne in Rome and didn't lift
a
finger for them. In reality, he visited the place repeatedly during
his
reign and spoke out consistently againsy communism.
He visited as many countries as he could in an effort to consolidate
his own
power, not just Poland (and it would only make sense that he go to
Poland at
least a few times), and speaking out against oppression is the
absolute
minimum we should expect out of anybody, much less the leader of the
world's
largest christian church. What, the leader of the religion of peace,
love,
and brotherhood spoke out against bad stuff? Whoop-de-FUCKING-do.
Give him
a ***** lollipop.
The solidarity
movement itself acknowledges his great role. Your attempts to
belittle
him owe nothing to a concern for accuracy in Polish history. He
simply
don't want to give this guy an ounce of credit for anything simply
because he's a religious figure. You're a bigot.
No, you're a hero-worshipper. Look at the fucking splendor his
CORPSE is
treated to while millions starve all over the world.
Let me make myself clear. I have no interest in worshipping his corpse.
I view the spectacle yesterday as bizarre but intriguing. Your
reference to the starving millions is equally bizarre. Are you
proposing that his corpse he barbequed and sent to Ethiopia?
Many thousands of people in Poland did all the hard
work. What we are seeing now is typical hagiography.
Strange then that the Polish President AND Lech Walesa, and pretty
much
the entire Polish nation are joining in.
Look up the word hagiography.
Third, he presided over the world's largest hierarchical,
patriarchal, and
authoritarian institution, excepting maybe a few of the world's
largest
nations.
He sure did. The only difference between me and you is that I
acknowledge the downsides but you don't acknowledge the upsides of
the
man.
He selectively spoke out against oppression while simultaneously
leading
western history's greatest institution of oppression ever. ***** him,
*****
the religion that worships his corpse, and ***** hero-worshippers
everywhere.
Clearly a pure bigot. You give atheists a bad name.

Oy.
The "spectacle" to which you refer was a ***** FUCKING CORPSE being
surrounded with millions upon millions of dollars worth of splendor, all in
the name of a religion whose putative founder commanded poverty and
humility. The corpse-worshiping death cult known as the RC church is not
"bizarre but intriguing." Two-headed puppies are "bizzarre but intriguing".
This "spectacle" of a medieval institution projectile-vomiting into the face
of its own founder is better described as nauseating.

Since when was the news about what's newsworthy? It's good for
ratings, good for sales, this constant pope coverage.
And anyway, there will be another one along in a few days.
More glue-people-to-their-television constant coverage goodness!

They'll just replace him with another.

The pope did a lot to help folks. Even though I'm not theist, I reckon
he deserves a bit of respect, unless he did something nasty to
you....and I don't reckon that he did anything bad to you or anybody.

Now he knows the truth. (well, that's what the christers say; might as well
turn it around on them)
