I think the key term is "non-sexually explicit". Unless they knew of some
"sexually explicit" message, there's no cover-up.
But in the thousands and thousands of re-tellings, it's easy to just
omit the "non-sexually explicit" clause, and hammer home two points
to the people over and over:
1) Foley sent sexually explicit messages to minors
2) nearly a dozen high-level GOP leaders knew about Foley sending
messages to minors for a year or more, and did nothing
This is similar to how Bush kept referring to Saddam Hussein
and the 9/11 terrorist attacks over & over to mislead the
public into thinking Iraq had something to do with 9/11.
However, given that the former only ruins the reputations of
some Republicans, while the latter resulted in a pointless
war with large numbers of people killed, I approve.
