there aren't too many.
Dear fellow atheists, infidels and heretics,
For many years now, I have been fascinated by documentary filmmaking.
I have been involved in many aspects of the film industry both in
front of and behind the camera but I have always wanted to make a
documentary. In fact, several times, I have almost done so but the
deal always seemed to fall through.
Why am I telling you this? Let me relate to you a conversation I had
with an acquaintance recently. He and I are both members of a social
group comprised of atheists in Los Angeles and we are both involved in
filmmaking. We were talking about documentaries and how we both loved
them and we both came to the realization that neither of us has ever
seen or heard of a comprehensive documentary on atheism- its history,
what people think of it and experiences of atheists themselves. The
thought struck me- this is my chance to make a documentary!
Of course, now I have a problem. I have a documentary all ready to
shoot, I even have equipment to shoot it with, but it will be a very
large undertaking requiring hiring crew and travel and not one I am
able to finance on the small amount of money I make.
Yeah, I know, I'm begging you for money, but wait! There's a catch!
You wouldn't be donating the money, you would be investing it! Sure,
everyone always says that, but I mean it literally. For $5 you will
own 1 share of the movie. I'm offering 5000 shares which means that
each share is worth %0.02 of any profit that the film might make both
via possible broadcast and VHS/DVD sales.
Alternately, Im also looking for someone who knows about how to write
grant applications for this. I'm not very confident that I can get a
grant for it (although the head of the National Endowment of the
Humanities actually is a family friend, which I suppose might help but
I doubt he would be willing to pull strings) considering the subject
matter, but it's worth a try.
And I want to say up-front- I personally have never directed a feature
film. I've done a few music videos, some animation, etc. all of which
can be viewed at the minervamedia.net website. I'm currently working
in Hollywood doing sound design, sound mixing and voice overs for
various TV shows and films.
However, my father is the founder of the film studies department at
Indiana University and has written well over 20 books on film. He
taught me a great deal... and I'm lucky to have some very, very
competent people willing to be crew if I can get the budget. I admit
that this is a risk due to my inexperience and I can understand why
that might make you unwilling to invest.
As I already said, I have the equipment to shoot it already. What I
need to pay for is crew, and I know quite a few people who would be
willing to work on this for a very small fee but I cannot in good
conscience ask them to devote the time this would require of them, and
travel expenses which will be minor but significant. Im not expecting
to personally profit from this at all. This is something that I want
to do and I feel needs to be done to help educate America about us.
