Object: Atheism origin
It seems that some people, faced with a concept they cannot understand,
opt to reject it. But there are some facts that we cannot possibly
reject, like the existence of infinite space, infinite time, and
infinite numbers, which are clearly beyond our grasp. These facts
provide us with a justification to accept concepts we do not
understand.

Why, you wouldn't be talking about 'God' here, would you? That is sure some
'concept', *if* that's what you're referring to. An abstract construct, is
it not?
But there are some facts that we cannot possibly

reject, like the existence of infinite space, infinite time, and
infinite numbers, which are clearly beyond our grasp.

As you can see from some of the replies; no they're not.
These facts

provide us with a justification to accept concepts we do not
understand.

So does that make concepts we do not understand necessarily, 'true', then?
And by the by: everyone seems to be aware of the basic 'concept' of 'God'.
We've been deluged with it. The problem is that not a single theist on the
planet has ever been able to prove the thing even exists. And yet people
worship and adore it. (And turned belief in something so devoid of reality
into a cash-cow and a source of great political power in the process.
'Tragic', if you ask me. Rife with the chance to abuse.)
I believe the expression that readily comes to mind is, 'blind faith'. And
you know how erroneous *that* often is. Why persist in delusion?

Somehow, we are not able to even imagine anything which is not made of
parts we already know. Try it, think of anything absolutely unique and
original.

But there are some facts that we cannot possibly

reject, like the existence of infinite space, infinite time, and
infinite numbers, which are clearly beyond our grasp.

As you can see from some of the replies; no they're not.

They are facts. To say they are not, does not make them any less real.

These facts

provide us with a justification to accept concepts we do not
understand.

So does that make concepts we do not understand necessarily, 'true', then?

Absolutely not! They just show us that there are things beyond our
grasp.

And by the by: everyone seems to be aware of the basic 'concept' of 'God'.

Isn't that odd, since we are unable to imagine anything truly original?
Could it be that someone told them?

We've been deluged with it. The problem is that not a single theist on the
planet has ever been able to prove the thing even exists.

God is supposed to be a pure spirit. How could we, using material
things, prove the existence of a spirit?
And yet people

worship and adore it. (And turned belief in something so devoid of reality
into a cash-cow and a source of great political power in the process.
'Tragic', if you ask me. Rife with the chance to abuse.)

You are right. There are immoral people, who do not really believe in
God, but use it to exploit the simple.

I believe the expression that readily comes to mind is, 'blind faith'. And
you know how erroneous *that* often is. Why persist in delusion?

Faith is lying to yourself that something is true, despite lack of
evidence. Trying to live a lie is called disfunctionality. It's a
hard way to live all right. If you just admit that you don't know
there is a god and do what is right for the people you care about (and
hopefully, you do care about everyone) it all becomes much simpler and
you become much happier.
That's what atheism has done for the rest of us.

Perhaps the absence of faith is a gift, as the absence of a hideous

You are free to believe what you want. I know that to live one's faith
is not easy, but suspect that not to do it might be more difficult.

Your fears are as unfounded with reality as your faith. It's called
childhood indoctrination. I think religion needs to be regulated along
the same line as the sale of alcohol. Abuse of either is equally
dangerous, and religion is force-fed to children.

What's so funny about peace, love and

following on 21 Jul 2006 08:40:43 -0700 iin alt.atheism?

But there are some facts that we cannot possibly

reject, like the existence of infinite space, infinite time, and
infinite numbers, which are clearly beyond our grasp.

As you can see from some of the replies; no they're not.

They are facts. To say they are not, does not make them any less real.

OK, prove infinite space and time. In a battle of advanced math

It seems that some people, faced with a concept they cannot understand,
opt to reject it.

Induced and reinforced terror, of course.
