Atheist at a Bar Mitzvah |
Yesterday we attended the Bar Mitzvah of a family friend. This was a
"Reconstructionist" congregation, a kind of "flower power" version of
Judaism.
Towards the end of the ceremony, my ten year old daughter, after listening
to the congregation chant monotonously back to the cantor for two hours,
leaned over and whispered "Dad, they sound like robots praising their
builder."
Smart kid, I think she'll be all right.

Smart all right. She already has theists figured out. Must have had
smart parents. :-)

Excellent! Mine commented on the little box behind the altar where they
kept the scrolls. Between the two of us it became known as the god closet.

No minimum age. But, she would have to make the request

Does she use the Internet in any way? Does SHE want to be on

Yes she does use the internet, but I'd not ask her just now. She's
learning to navigate a religious society and keep her head down. (Lots
of kids do the usual Sunday church thing, and everyone knows which church
everyone goes to.)

Regardless of whether it was a murder sacrifice or a suicide sacrifice,
it's all very Old Testament this need for blood in order to atone for
alleged wrong-doing and I'll have nothing to do with it. You're free to
splash about and play in the blood of your sacred sacrificial lamb and
declare it fresh spring water if you want, however. It still stinks of
death to me.
