Dan Barker, George H. Smith, and David Mills would be a few good authors to
check out.

FWIW, I have a website which points out many of the
contradictions and errors of the bible and Christian
belief in general from an exchristian's perspective:

The Ursa Major link isn't working, either.

What kind of books? About what?
Try Karen Armstrong "A History of God"
With a few occasional objections of minor sorts,
its a good read. God is a far more complex idea than most people
realize, Armstrong does a good job of clueing you into historical
complexities and changes in concepts of god through history.
Try "Out of the Desert?- Archaeology and the Exodus/Conquest narratives" by
William H. Steibing Jr. Prometheus books.
A good primer on the OT and archaeology.
With lots of biographies for follow up.
Short review. 100 years ago, American archaeologists confidently came
to Palestine and established "Biblical archaeology" to prove
the Bible true. A century later it turns out they instead debunked
much of the OT as being history.
This book gathers much of the information in one place
about how that occured. Lots of hard facts to consider.
"Egypt, Canaan and Israel in Ancient Times"
Donald B. Redford Princeton University Books.
An excellent history of the region that gives you a good peg
to hang further reading, history and backround knowledge of
subjects related to biblical claims, history and archaeology from.
This book has been around a few years and was a
history book club selection and so should be easily available
cheap at used book stores in good condition.
Redford, a noted Egyptologist is pretty caustic about
the abuse of Israelite history by religous fanatics.
In archeological circles, he is considered a true expert
and a heavy hitter.
Check book stores or magazine stands for Biblical Archaeology Review.
Lots of arguing goes on there. Good practice for sorting out bull doo
doo claims from real archaeology.
Check out Scholars Bookshelf, www.scholarsbookshelf.com,
they send out a jillion catalogues a year with lots of interesting books,
history, religion, philosophy, and other subjects, often scholarly and
University press books at deep discounts.
A recent find for me, "Early Edom and Moab - The Beginning of the
Iron Age in Southern Jordan" Edited by Piotr Bienkowski Sheffield
Archaeological Monographs #7.
This is straight archeology, the real stuff. My interest, Moab and Edom
are mentioned in the OT in an anachronistic manner.
Moses and the Israelites supposedly interact with Moab as a nation, but it
turns out Moab would not attain anything like nationhood for several
more centuries at least until the time of David or Solomon. Oops!
Its always nice to run across primary data cheap.
