Atheist radio show begins tomorrow
October 5, 2007
By Kristi Moore - Beginning tomorrow, the 14 percent of Americans who
label themselves as nonreligious will be able to turn on the radio
once a week and hear a radio show that caters to their specific
beliefs, or lack thereof.
The first national broadcast of a Freethought Radio program will be
aired over Air America Radio out of Madison, Wis., with guests such as
Christopher Hitchens, author of the best-selling book "God Is Not
Great: How Religion Poisons Everything."
Mr. Hitchens will be aired tomorrow on XM Satellite channel 167 and
over WWRL-AM (1600) in New York City from 7 to 8 p.m., the show's
regularly scheduled time.
"Our radio show is one with heritage," said co-host Dan Barker. "We
vote, serve in the military and sit on juries."
Mr. Barker, who is co-president of the Freedom From Religion
Foundation along with Annie Laurie Gaylor, said atheists, agnostics
and nonreligious are "rejecting the illness" of religion.
"We don't need what religion provides," he said. "If salvation is a
cure, then atheism is a prevention."
The goal of the new atheist radio program is to serve "the rest of
us," he said. Mr. Barker pointed out that religious preaching can be
heard on the radio or television around the clock seven days a week
and that the free-thought radio show offers an alternative for one
hour every week.
"How often do nonreligious voices get heard?" he asked.
The show will include a regular segment called "Theocracy Alert,"
interviews and music.
Mr. Barker said future interviewees could include Ron Reagan, son of
former President Ronald Reagan.
Air America Radio is a radio network and program syndication service
that generally features discussion and information programs with hosts
reflecting liberal and progressive points of view.
Air America Radio filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 13, 2006, and
has experienced severe turnover in years past. Since filing for
bankruptcy, the network has come under the new ownership of SLG Radio
LLC, an entity controlled by Stephen L. Green.
"Air America is now going strong," Mr. Barker said.

I don't know what the need is for a radio station or clothing that proclaims
one an atheist.
Just as I don't listen to programs that promote the idea that the earth is
flat or wear jewelry that says I believe in the holocaust, I don't see the
need to proclaim I am an atheist..

Since it's local to me, I've been listening to it since inception.
It really is very good and Dan is an incredibly sharp guy.
Their biggest problem (at least I see it as a problem; they
probably don't) is preaching to the choir 99 percent of the time.

Actually, this appears to be their biggest problem:

Bankruptcy filing under Chapter 11
On October 13, 2006, Air America filed for protection from creditors,
i.e. bankruptcy, under chapter 11, at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for
the Southern District of New York.[11] Air America continued
broadcasting while the finances were worked out with the creditors.
The company had US$4,331,265.30 in assets and US$20,266,056.23 in
liabilities. Al Franken alone was owed US$360,749.98 and Rob Glaser,
founder of Real Networks, was owed the most at US$9.8 million. The
filing had over 25 pages of creditors and shows the company lost US
$9.1 million in 2004, US$19.6 million in 2005 and an additional US
$13.1 million by mid-October in 2006.[12][13]

....combined with this:
According to:

AA is broadcast on 63 stations; according to this:

....because there is no church of atheism, no rituals associated with

Atheists should be labeled "believers" also----they believe, without
evidence, that there is no intelligence behind the form of the
universe.
Now, the odds are that they are correct. However the only reasonable
position is that of the Agnostics who (correctly) state that not only
do they not know, but nobody else knows. Only Agnostics deserve the
proud title of "non-believers".

No. Saying "I don't believe you" is not a belief.

No. Saying "I don't believe you" is not a belief.
Now, the odds are that they are correct. However the only reasonable
position is that of the Agnostics who (correctly) state that not only
do they not know, but nobody else knows. Only Agnostics deserve the
proud title of "non-believers".
Do you believe a god exists? (Please note: I am not asking if a god
exists, I'm asking if you believe a god exists. Surely you know your own
state of belief concerning the existence of gods.)
