Atheists who volunteer don't feel any particular need to advertize the
fact that they are atheists, they just want to help people. Unlike many
christian groups who tell anyone and everyone that they are christians
in a seeming attempt to prove that christianity=morality.

Members of New York Atheists gave movey via NYA to a New Orleans
atheist organisation. Which pobably wasn't even tax deductible. But we
did it.
One of the reasons we did it that way was beacuse the FEMA web site
had suggested donations to Pat Robertson's organisation Operation
Blessing. Which was taking faith based charity to a new low.
But having contributed well for the tsunami (via Doctors Without
Borders), Katrina victims and the Kashmir/Pakistan earthquake (via the
International Red Cross) I think most of us had run out of money to
donate by the end of the year.

***** you. This atheist gave $3,000 to the American red Cross -- a
secular organization -- for Katrina. What did you give?
Not one atheist organization came forward to help the Katrina victims.
Thank you for your individual concern and action. The victims thank you.
No will you cease trying to imply by the bit of sophistry above about
non existent so called "Atheist organisations"

This is an example of Duke's 'Christmas Spirit'. You can bet in a week
or so he will be wishing us a "Hapy Christmas" and exhibiting good
will to all men. Then, the Christian cynical season over again, he
will get back to normal and start denigrating and lying about us once
again simply because we do not share is irrational beliefs.

Are you seeking to imply that atheists did not help the Katrina
victims simply on the grounds that they do not have aid organisations.
We contribute to "Volunteers Overseas" which is intentionally non
religious. Do you seek to belittle my contribition by your bit of
disingenious half-truth? Thank you for your Christmass spirit towards

There are plenty of secular groups, and I never had any
problem working through them. Up until recently, I
didn't even have a problem working through religious
groups if the money went to helping people rather
than proselytizing, but people like you have sensitized
me to the fact that people like you think that working
through religious groups makes us inferior. Weird, that
- I would have thought that the ability to put aside our
differences and work together in times of emergency
was a good thing, but for some reason you sneer at
us for helping you do good things, so I've been trying
to avoid religious groups nowadays.
Atheists are not good for anything to help others other

Hrm - so the almost 150 people I helped yesterday and
who gave me an ovation didn't actually exist? Interesting
... I wonder how I got that delusion that those people
existed and were so grateful for my help when no-one else
would help them. Several of my delusional people even
came up afterwards and said 'God bless you' to me.
Duke, why do you post your bigoted statements against
atheists? They're not true, and they don't help convince
any atheists to join you - if anything, they push us away.
I know that you lower my opinion of Christians with every
post.

Officially mainline *non-fundamentalist* religious churches and groups
do not view assistance to those in need as a proselytizing tactic, but
rather an integral part of their ministry and mission in the world.

Please don't let the arrogance and disrespect of a vocal few in mainline
groups distort the basic goodwill and well meaning of the majority.
Every bag of apples I've ever bought always has one or two about to
rot. As you know, a very common way of boosting a shaky self image is

We have a saying that the difference between clergy and laymen in the
Church is that the clergy are paid to be good whereas the laymen are
good for nothing.

They also embarrass, scandalize and dismay most others of us who
recognize how antithetical such statements are to the bottom line of our
faith--to love God and your neighbor as yourself.

Alas, and no wonder.
