gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." - Stephen F. Roberts

Who in turn likely cribbed it from someone like Mencken or Ingersoll.

I'm happy to say that I agree with both quotations, but even happier
to say that the Huxley one is genuine, see:
http://www.philosophers.co.uk/quotations/author_search.php3?author=Thomas%20Huxley&num=2
(Except that it should be T.H. Huxley, not T.X.)
Irony Mode: ON
Not that theists have ever forged quotes from famous people like
Plato, you musn't think that.
Irony Mode: OFF
What surprises me is that anyone should consider this an effective
slavo aginst atheism.
Who ever proved Osiris doesn't exist, or Apollo? There is no more
reason to believe or disbelieve them than for the Christian god. The
only difference between God and Osiris is that He is part of a living
tradition, but the same is true of Ganesha and Siva as opposed to
Athena and Quetzalcoatl. None of these dieties has any evidence to
support their existence or nonexistence, because Quetzalcoatl never
strolled the streets, even in Chichen Itza.
It is inherently more rational to be an atheist than a believer of any
sort, because the atheist treats all claims of belief equally, rather
than prefer one just because they grew up with it.
You don't have to prove that any deity doesn't exist - indeed you
can't - to be more rational than a theist, simply because your belief
is guided by evidence.
The topic of absolute proof is a red herring put forward by people who
are foolish enough to think that without proof all beliefs are
equivalent. The thing which must be pushed is the point that our
beliefs are founded and informed by evidence, not tradition.
That is what makes science and rationalism superior. It's not just the
picture, its the way it was painted.

Yet another of these in-you-face bigoted morons.
