Me too! The Catholic high school that I attended did a pretty good job
of teaching about world religions. They unknowingly set me on my path
to lack of belief.:)

When two men of science disagree, they do not invoke the secular arm;
they wait for further evidence to decide the issue, because, as men
of science, they know that neither is infallible. But when two
theologians differ, since there is no criteria to which either can
appeal, there is nothing for it but mutual hatred and an open or
covert appeal to force.

Will they be simply be taught *about* these various religions? Or will there
be attempts to proselytize?
If the former, I have no objection. Indeed, I see comparative religion
courses as vital - it shows religious children that there is more to the
religious world than the religion they were brought up in, and it will show
atheist kids that no one religion has a monopoly on "truth" despite the
claims of each religion.
If the latter, then I am dead-set against it, because it is a violation of
the separation of church and state.

I see this as a "kneejerk" reaction by some "fundamentalist" atheists.
Reading the article, it sounds like some education was going on, rather
than proselytizing. Althought, I must admit, that I am surprised that
some fundamentalist xians weren't up in arms about subjecting their kids
to other religions.

If the object is education, I would have no objection either. However,
I would hope that the speakers would include at least one
non-believer. I doubt if the fundy xtians would go for that idea
though.

As an atheist I am totally OK with this.
I would not be upset if my son went on these trips.
Schools should educate children about these important aspects of
society - you cannot pretend that religion doesnt exist - its a real
part of the world we live in - and an important part.
The people protesting this are simply being stoopid.
They give "atheists" a bad name.

Agreed, on all accounts. To say "there is no room in public schools for
religion" is just plain stupid. How does one teach history without
mentoining religion?

I agree. It seems unbiased, although I'd love to see a Buddhist visit in
there. I have no problem whatsoever with youth being exposed to religions
outside their own. Sounds perfectly healthy. As an atheist, I don't
understand the protest at all.

This atheist concurs. In fact, were this to happen at my kids' school,
I might consider volunteering to expose them to some Buddhism,
Shintoism, or whatever is found locally.

Well, I also have a problem with the rationale being used by those who
are protesting this, though I wouldn't go so far as to call these
particular atheists stupid. At the same time, though, I do think it's
problematic that they're not including atheist and other nontheistic
groups in this initiative of theirs. I think that nonbelievers deserve
understanding and respect as much as any of the religious groups do, and
need it probably about as bad as any of them.
