Although as a British atheist, I haven't paid my TV license.

Too bad. I was hoping this was an argument about payouts to
"faith-based" charities. These churches don't pay taxes (even for
their businesses) and now they get payouts too? Where's our cut?

Why, honey, only the little people go to war. Du-uh.

Have to point out that you don't need to be a citizen to pay taxes,
you just have to earn enough money in the US whether you be citizen,
resident alien, illegal alien, or visiting alien. The only thing US
citizenship makes you vulnerable for in case of taxes is that US
citizens living abroad still have to pay US income taxes even if all
their income is non US (assuming they are earning enough to have to
pay taxes). The IRS doesn't even care if you are dead when tax time
rolls around as long as you were alive during some part of the tax
year.
Oh, and you didn't need to be a citizen to be drafted back when the US
had a draft. All permanent resident males (aliens and citizens)
between the relevant ages could be drafted (and all still have to
register for selective service). The only difference that being a
citizen gave was that citizens could become officers.

Yep. we had an Irish guy in our basic training company. He had come over to
visit his mother and ended up drafted.
He was lucky and could sing or play some instrument. They pulled him out of
basic and put him into a band or something.
Where's Heinlein when you need him?

Actually, noncitizens do pay taxes. I did during all my years here on
a student visa.
There *is* a taxation without representation issue there of course...

Lo, many moons past, on Sun, 07 Dec 2003 15:24:42 -0800, a stranger

Except that you can complain to your local reps about issues (my
father did) and are free to either return to your nation of origin, or
apply for citizenship.
My dad remarked that if American high schoolers had to learn what he
had to learn to get the vote, it'd be a much smarter electorate.

That's true. And if you're a resident alien you're allowed to
contribute to politicians' campaign funds as well.

Perhaps. Otoh, all you had to do was go thru a list of 100 silly
questions with official answers. Then you get asked ten and have to
get only six right.

My sister's thick as a xian and she became a citizen of the USA. They give
you the questions, and they give you the answers. Then you show up and write
them down. After that you swear to God. Urine. I mean, You're in!

Actually, my exam was not written. They gave me the 100 questions and
answers. When I went in, they guy asked me the first six of my ten
randomly selected questions and that was it (since yo uhave to get
only 6 out of 10 right, they stop asking once you get 6 right). Then I
had to demonstrate my knowledge of English, which I did by writing
down the sentence "they have horses on their farm," which the guy read
to me.
