Object: ATHEIST'S SUITE IN ROME IS GOING FORWARD.
Attorneys for a small-town parish in Rome have been ordered to appear
in court next week. The Catholic cleric was accused by Luigi Cascioll
of violated Italian law by telling the lie that Jesus Christ existed.
If the courts and Church feel this move is unseeming, they will squash
it. However, I think they may realize that it is an opportunity to get
their message across and decide to exploit this just as Cascioll is.
This could be a mangnificant circus before it is over, if both want it
and can carry it foreward. It is the type of thing that would draw
people everywhere to read, listen and think about the old faith. Both
Church and atheism would benefit.
But, I would not expect anything to be proven or resolved! Do you?
Nor do I think the Church will be convicted of breaking Italian law,
unfortunately.

Damn!!! From the subject line, I thought we all had an exclusive timeshare
in Italy!

My last vestige of "hands off religion" respect disappeared in the smoke and
choking dust of September 11th 2001, followed by the "National Day of
Prayer," when prelates and pastors did their tremulous Martin Luther King
impersonations and urged people of mutually incompatible faiths to hold
hands, united in homage to the very force that caused the problem in the
first place.

Maybe Jesus will appear as a witness for the Catholic Church. If he exists
he certainly should. This his best opportunity in 2,000 years to demonstrate
his authenticity.
If he doesn't show it is solid objective evidence that he is just the
figment of man's imagination.

Bill, from personal experience I can say that He would not appear.
Early this month I clicked on to find a quote for a gold stock at
allpennygstock.com , one with the symbol C.GOD. Right there where I
should have been able to get a quote were the words, "you are not
entitled to view the image of this symbol!" no kidding!

I think it's more interesting that no one is paying any attention
to it. I mean, don't you think something so significant as proving a
'messiah' existed would garner world wide attention.... be the front
page.... christians reeling on their hind legs demanding death to the
heather and all that...
But it's tucked away in a couple of paragraphs in the pages. It's
not getting a fraction of the headlines it deserves.

Oh, but the story WAS on front pages and on tv news, and the real
attention will be when it comes to trial, if it indeed does come to
trial. I suspect, however, that conservatives will manage to buy him
off or find some other way to avoid coming to trial. Religious
controversy is, after all, very disruptive to a society, not
constuctive at all to public harmony. Religious are so divisive . . .

Problem is that it's an ill conceived case. Not only can one not prove
someone didn't exist 2000 years ago, but there's just as much
"evidence" about such a figure existing as about any other from that
era. It's just that most such "evidences" are naturally in the form of
hearsay that's been presumably transcribed at one time or another,
there no or little forensic evidence, and it's not feasible to assume
as the default position that all historical figures whose existence
cannot be proven in a court of law beyond a shadow of doubt are to be
assumed fakes and that people who speak of such figures are to be
prosecuted. This particular case represents borderline kookery in this
respect, so I am actually surprised at all the attention it's getting.

Good point.
Still, in a country (US) where ID is actually a legal issue, the
issue of there actually existing a 'son of god' is being ignored.
It's certainly understandable that anyone not believing in Jeebus
would be considered 'kook' material but none the less, no one is
standing up to deliver the killing blow for superstition. They are
content to watch their myth Daddy fade to the back pages without
offering any complaint.
Rather bizarre that uttering the word Evolution brings more
gnashing of teeth than proof of deity.

I think that's because a lot of xians know that their religion is based
on mythology. Besides, I bet the "trial" will not be conclusive.
