Outcry over 'UFO' Sydney clone birth claim
February 12, 2004
Head of the Clonaid project, biochemist Brigitte Boisselier, who is in
Australia to monitor the birth, claims the baby boy has been released from
hospital.
A claim that a cloned baby had been born in Sydney was the medical
equivalent of a UFO story, federal Health Minister Tony Abbott said today.
Mr Abbott, and Rev Fred Nile, both said cloning was dangerous, illegal and
immoral.
"I think that this is the medical equivalent of a UFO story and I don't
support cloning," Mr Abbott told the Nine Network.
Opposition health spokeswoman Julia Gillard said Clonaid's claims were
disturbing.
"The parliament unanimously passed legislation to outlaw cloning in
Australia," she told the Nine Network.
She said the legislation had the support of every parliamentarian.
"I don't think Australians support cloning, the use of this technology on
human beings," Ms Gillard said.
"We need to get to the bottom of what's happened here."
Controversial international cloning group Clonaid today claimed to have
successfully created its sixth child, born in a Sydney hospital on February
5.
Clonaid is linked to the quasi-religious Raelian Movement, which believes
aliens created life on Earth and cloning is the key to humanity's survival.

I think that you must have heard by now that South Korean scientists
have cloned human cells and grew them to the blastocyst stage in order
to harvest stem cells. No babies, but at least they are publishing their
work in peer reviewed scientific journals.
