Kerry's 'Tawdry Political Trick' Angers Lynne Cheney
By Susan Jones
CNSNews.com Morning Editor
October 14, 2004
(1st Add: Includes comments from Elizabeth Edwards on the
controversy.)
(CNSNews.com) - Sen. John Edwards pointedly brought up Mary Cheney's
sexuality at the vice presidential debate last week; and on Wednesday,
Sen. John F. Kerry did the same thing -- prompting a sharp retort from
Lynne Cheney, the vice president's wife.
In response to a question about whether homosexuality is a matter of
choice, President Bush responded, "I just don't know. I do know that
we have a choice to make in America, and that is to treat people with
tolerance and respect and dignity. It's important that we do that."
Kerry responded, "I think if you were to talk to ***** Cheney's
daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who
she was, she's being who she was born as. I think if you talk to
anybody, it's not choice."
At a post-debate rally in Pittsburgh, Lynne Cheney expressed
irritation at Kerry's deliberate reference to her daughter Mary's
sexual preference:
"The only thing I can conclude is he is not a good man. I'm speaking
as a mom," Mrs. Cheney said. "What a cheap and tawdry political
trick."
Mary Beth Cahill, John Kerry's campaign manager, called Mary Cheney's
sexuality "fair game" in a post-debate interview with Fox News
Wednesday night.
On Thursday morning, the Kerry campaign defended the senator for
mentioning Mary Cheney's lesbianism: "There's nothing wrong with him
bringing this up," said Kerry campaign adviser Debra Deshong.
"Maybe you haven't been listening to ***** Cheney," Deshong said in an
interview with Fox & Friends. She noted that Vice President *****
Cheney, at an Aug. 24, 2004, town hall meeting in Davenport, Iowa,
stated that "Lynne and I have a gay daughter" in response to a
question.
"We see nothing wrong with the fact that someone has a gay member of
their family," Deshong told Fox & Friends. "If Lynne Cheney has a
problem with that, that's something she needs to solve within the
confines of her own family."
Deshong said Mary Cheney is not a "young girl who cannot defend
herself." And she said John Kerry was talking about the fact that gay
Americans "are part of the fabric of America."
Deshong accused Republicans of using gay issues to divide America.
Also on Thursday morning, Elizabeth Edwards, Sen. Edwards' wife,
responded on ABC Radio that she believes Lynne Cheney "overreacted to
this and treated it as if it's shameful to have this discussion. I
think that's a very sad state of affairs.
"I think that it indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to
her daughter's sexual preferences," Edwards added. "It makes me really
sad that that's Lynne's response."
Sen. Edwards made a reference to the sexual orientation of Mary Cheney
in his Oct. 5 debate with Vice President ***** Cheney.
"I think the vice president and his wife love their daughter...And you
can't have anything but respect for the fact that they're willing to
talk about the fact that they have a gay daughter, the fact that they
embrace her. It's a wonderful thing. And there are millions of parents
like that who love their children, who want their children to be
happy."
Vice President ***** Cheney, in response, simply thanked Sen. Edwards
"for the kind words he said about my family and our daughter. I
appreciate that very much." He let the subject drop.
Mary Cheney is openly homosexual, but Kerry's and Edward's specific
mention of that fact is seen by some as a not-so-subtle effort to turn
off conservative Christian voters, who are President Bush's political
base -- and who may not know about Mary Cheney.

I think the low blows are actually being thrown by the Cheney family
(specifically Lynne) and the republicans. It was pretty convenient for
Lynne and ***** to bring up their daughter when it makes Bush and
Cheney look "compassionate." It would be one thing if they never
brought it up in any speech or anything that furthers their campaign
with moderates...but they have.
For them to publicly talk about Mary being gay, then to turn around
and say that it was a "low blow" or inappropriate should actually clue
the moderates in on how they REALLY feel about gays and lesbians--that
we love 'em but we would rather they stay in their 2X2 closets. We
love 'em, but we don't talk about 'em (unless it will make people
think WE are compassionate).
It's like it is some kind of "painful" subject that shouldn't be
raised instead of a simple fact of life. Would they feel so indignant
if Mary had found the cure for cancer and Kerry mentioned that? Would
they feel so indignant if Mary was a heterosexual and just had a baby
and Kerry had mentioned that? Would they feel so indignant if Mary had
MS and Kerry mentioned it and said we need to do more research etc.
etc...
NO, of course they wouldn't. So all this righteous indignation that he
took a "low blow" or used "taaawdry tactics" is simply a symptom that
they were lying through their teeth when they claim not to be ashamed
of her. I think if I were Mary, I would actually be devastated by
their reaction--it is like she is something "unmentionable" and
something to be so ashamed of that no one but her family is ever
allowed to mention her.
I'm sorry that Mom and Dad Cheney are so ashamed of their daughter
being gay that the mere mention of it makes John Kerry a "bad man."
THEY are the ones that I lost whatever shred of respect I had left
for.
Gay people are deeply hurt when their parents react the way the
Cheney's did. If they were really proud of her they would have reacted
differently. For instance if she had been a doctor and Kerry had
brought that up they would not have reacted the way they did.

If you are a fellow American patriot and lover of the First Amendment, then
by these presents greetings. It is good that you seek rational and
democratic discussion of the great and urgent issues facing our nation.
Unfortunately, I think you've come to the wrong place. See the bottom of
this post for additional evidence.
Especially if you remember the old days of thoughtful discussion in the
newsgroups, this triumph of noise over signal may sadden you. Hyde Park of
the world and cheap advertising are all that remain.
However, there are many alternatives. For example, there are many less
anonymous forums on the Internet where polite discussions can be found. Even
better if you can build bridges to real people in the physical world. For
example, you could treat a rational RINO to a movie--like Fahrenheit 9/11.
Lots of good books still being published. (Michael Moore has two new ones.)
You could write a letter for your local paper--you'll reach more "normal"
people and probably have more impact than here. Or you could donate to the
political campaigns--I confess I've already made seven donations. Just
remember that big money is harming democracy, that BushCo has more money
than anyone, and that if money alone decides elections then the American
republic is already dead.
Last, but MOST important: VOTE! Your nation needs you NOW!
On the other hand, if you are a Bushevik troll, then in the immortal
floor-of-the-Senate words of the unloved ***** Cheney: "Go f*ck yourself.

1. Ad hominem evasion of real issues.
2. Stone-headed fanaticism.

I would agree too, 'cept for the fact that Mary Cheney is 34.

trou, farted, whirled, then shouted:

I have do Disagree. Kerry and Edwards simply do not need to bring
the kids into the debates.

I would agree too, 'cept for the fact that Mary Cheney is 34.

Who gets to decide whose sexual preferences are "fair game?"
Are there different "rules" for adults vs children? Celebs vs proles?
Democrats vs Republicans?

I don't think a child's sexuality is anyone's business but the
family's. Once they hit adulthood, yes. Fair game regardless of
affiliation.

No right to privacy?

Why no Fred, and that is why everyone of Chelsea Clinton's moved is
followed by you folks, her getting smashed, her buying a pregnancy
tester, her being the white house dog. Her getting a face lift.
Apparently ***** Cheney doesn't agree with you either. He has discussed
his gay daughter in public.

And is actively involved in her father's election campaign. That makes
her reasonably fair game, as long as what is said is truthful. Mr. Kerry's
remarks
were in no way an attack on Ms. Cheney. He did not even come close to
stepping over the line.
