School Choice is the Right Choice
President Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program is not the ultimate solution
for the massive educational bureaucracy that spends more of its time
advancing a liberal agenda that belittles parents and mocks traditional
values than it does teaching our children to read, write and do arithmetic.
The best solution would be to give parents full choice in their children's
education. The President's program sheds light into the educational system
by putting schools that are failing to educate our children out of business.
An article in today's Washington Post criticized the "No Child Left Behind"
program, saying that not enough "good" schools are available to children.
But at the same time it has given a voice to children who have been failing
educationally in silence because of special interest groups. Under the
program, parents in many failing schools are given the ability to take their
children out of bad schools or get free tutoring. Just last week in New
Orleans more than 600 parents waited on the results of a special lottery as
if it were the weekly "Power Ball." However what this lottery did was give
264 children a chance to attend a school taken away from the local school
board and given to the University of New Orleans.
The Washington Post and groups like the NEA might view this as bad news, the
truth is that shining a little light on a troubled system and attempting to
dislodge the bureaucratic inertia that has paralyzed schools in the inner
cities offers hope and generates the activism of parents for their
children's well being and their future. Offering free tutoring, transferring
to successful schools and making those failed schools conform to acceptable
standards are positive steps toward giving children a real chance at an
education. To read the article in today's Washington Post, click on the link

400,000 Signatures Collected in Ohio for Constitutional Amendment
Ensuring that marriage will be an issue in this election cycle, the Ohio
Campaign to Protect Marriage estimates it will submit over 400,000 petition
signatures, making Ohio potentially the 13th state with a marriage amendment
on the 2004 ballot. The grassroots movement across the country to protect
marriage quickly gained momentum in Ohio thanks to the efforts by the Ohio
Campaign to Protect Marriage led by Phil Burress. Burress, who also heads
Citizens for Community Values, one of the family policy councils associated
with FRC, said that the effort to collect the needed signatures was amazing,
given the short nine-week period allowed.
He also noted that the success of this petition drive proved that Ohioans
understand the importance of protecting marriage and are concerned about the
growing trend of activist judges overstepping their bounds. The passage of
this constitutional amendment in Ohio will keep activists from destroying
this cornerstone of society. The group will submit the petitions to
Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell by Wednesday's deadline to ensure
placement on the November ballot.
