Avoiding taxes. |
For many years I have been trying to trace my ancestors, and one of
the sources I use are the tax records the gouverment have kept of
the citizens who were obligated to pay the taxes. Most of my
genealogy research has been done in Sweden, which is world famous
for it's taxes and also has kept very good records for several
centuries. The tax records are of varying quality for finding facts
about those old relatives, sometimes you get a lot of details (my
favourite rumour is about when a tax on card playing was mandatory
and only one man in the parish paid it, presumably he played
solitare!) and sometimes you only get the fact that somebody living
on a certain farm paid tax, but there is one thing all those
records have in common: they were made to facilitate tax
collection, that is the authorities wanted to know where to send
the tax collector. Therefor *all records were made according to
which geographical area the taxpayers were living in. If a family
lived in Stockholm they would be listed in the Stockholm tax
records, and if they moved away they would be listed at their new
address. People were not expected to travel across the country to
their (or their ancestors) birth place to get on some other tax
collector's roll.
Another universal fact about taxes is that nobody wants to pay
them, people might realize that taxes are nessessary, but that
doesn't mean that they have to like it. Between those two opposing
forces, the authorities wants taxes and people do not want to pay
them, a lot of strategies have been created to save as much money
as possible, by legal means if possible but some unscruplous people
have not hesitated to cross the line into the illegal area.
Now the question that all have been waiting for, "How does this
help me from saving some of the taxmoney?" Sorry, it doesn't. I'm
going to try take this post to something which is on topic on this
newsgroup instead.
The Roman emperor Augustus decided to record all people in his
empire for tax purposes. The New Testament in the Bible tells about
how Joseph handled the situation. He decided to take off for
another part of the country. He supposedly choose Betlehem because
his family several generations back came from that town, but
considering the usual behaviour of tax collectors we can safely
assume that that was not his true motive. It is even doubtful if he
had any family in the neighbour- hood or he might have tried to
stay with them instead of trying to get a room at the inn,
especially if the alternative was that he and his pregnant wife
ended up staying in a stable. Well, his relatives might all have
moved from the area, be involved in a family feud with him or been
to distantly related so they didn't know him, but the point needs
explaining, why didn't he at least *try to stay with relatives?
If you read the part in the Bible carefully you will notice that it
does not say that he went to Betlehem becaus the authorities wanted
to register him there, he went because there was a tax registration
in progress. There is nothin that indicates that his motive was not
to avoid the tax.
Of course some time later the authorities caught up with Joseph and
he had to run off to Egypt. He stayed there until the statue of
limitation on tax evasion had run out.
The Bible is describing one of the earliest known attempts at tax
evasion, and millions of people celebrate the event each year.
If anybody has managed to read this far I wish to send you the (in
my opinion) appropriate seasons greetings: - Happy December
Shopping!
Lisbeth.

Very interesting. Now I understand the tradition of tax-evasion so
many christians have. :-)

There's no need to apologize when you have done nothing wrong, no answer
nor need to apologize for being human. Of course, I may be incorrect in
that last observation, that my presumption is you're human in a decent
one at that.
I am fairly certain I am human ... my blood is red, my ears are not
pointed, my skin is not green, eyes are human sized, etc. :-)
So there is no chance that you're a shape shifter? This means you're not
clanned?
Ah, now that is a different ball of fur. Wereleopard ... belonging to
the Red Cactus clan. Anita Blake fan, by any chance?
Amanda who? When I need fiction of the fantasy variety, I reach for the
masters. I suspect my list of masters does not parallel yours.
I am more of a classical Sci-fi reader; not much for fantasy. Well,
Tolkein. This is the only series of fantasy I read - I like the main
character.
As to
claned, back home I am claned to the bear & the wolf. One is a provider,
one is a teacher. I will leave the details for ou to figure out.
If we are speaking non-fantasy, I am clanned to the Turtle (Sioux).
Have a totem on my medicine bag - hand made bag - and I made that bag.
Nearly had a nervous breakdown doing so as I am NOT an artsy-craftsy
person.
Bear provider; wolf teacher. Great lessons to be learned from the wolf
clan.

For what, I did not anticipate thanks when I simply point out what I have
observed. Not to mention, the word is well overused and quite frequently
inappropriately so. Still, if it made you feel better of saying it, you
are welcome.
When I say "Thank you", it is always sincerely meant. Receiving a thank
you when one does not expect it can mean the person is truly
appreciative (at least when the words come from me!).
Qualified then, OK.
Remember, it's just you and your Harley-Davidson against the world, so
when are you going to charge?
Um, the doc won't let me have a Harley, a moped, or even an ATV.... she

Wouldn't do any good ... all three have told me the same (Primary Care
doc, surgeon, and Pain Clinic doc). I was told one fall or roll-over,
and I would be dead. Bones are brittle as I don't utilize calcium

SEAG Servicio de Extension Agricola y Ganadera (Paraguay)
SEAG South East Asia Games
Don't think any of the three apply. Help?
However, If I ever get the money together, an ATV and I may hit the
desert yet!
Suzuki four wheelers are about the best I have worked on.
A longer trip to a supplier.. but recommendation noted.
says I'd kill myself inside of two weeks trying to do the impossible on
any of the three. Can I just charge ahead on my own two feet??? :-)
Paws are better, but normally there are four of those. But then, you
indicate your not a shape shifter. I'm sad to hear that.
No, I am not a Roswell alien ... or a Vulcan. I belong to a Pard. Why
do you suppose I took the name of a cat ... and if you can see it, have

[kitter<=>kitten?] a long history in my area among the Native Americans.
Unfortunately they are all very evil.
Yes, but they live[d] in the high desert environment, to much wind & to
much heat battered the brain over the generations they were there.
Meanwhile, back in the real high country [Rockies, Montana & north,
through Alaska], shapeshifters are not held in anything but high esteem,
for they always benefit humanity. I've no doubt that at least one legend
says otherwise, but to date, I've not heard that one.
I am in the high desert ... have read the Navajo and other NA stories.
The heat and wind do batter!
I do enjoy the Thronos Rokke clan and their Ulfric and the .... um....
Blooddrinkers Pard (if memory is correct as to the name) and their
Nimir-Raj. My Pard does not have a Nimir-Raj or Nimir-Ra - as yet.
Give it time, humanity seems to always be willing to add the un-needed to
the better elements it presents to the universe.
I'd prefer no leader for the pard... male or female... democracy even
in a pard.
walksalone who was mildly surprised to see the above missive, apparently I

Never enough to suit me! :-) Reading a dupe is double the fun!
Well, yes, I suppose some enjoy my *embarrassing moments* as much as I do.
