Sen. John McCain said it all, and said it straight: The TV ad smearing
Sen. John Kerry's Vietnam War service was "dishonest and
dishonorable." Just as important was what else McCain said: "It was
the same kind of deal that was pulled on me."
Indeed it was. McCain was referring to vicious lies told about him
during the 2000 Republican primaries; they were both false and
effective. Now, as then, it is absolutely critical to the workings of
this democracy that honorable men and women of all political
persuasions step up to expose and discredit these shadowy character
assassins.
It's beginning to happen. After weeks of simmering as a "he said, she
said" series of attacks and defenses, the sleazy story of a new group
calling itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is being laid bare for
all to see. It's an ugly sight, full of old grudges, changed stories,
unfounded insinuations and outright falsehoods.
Nearly all of Kerry's Vietnam crewmates, no matter their politics,
have stepped up to defend him as a courageous leader. And now several
newspapers have examined two sets of information: Vietnam War
documents, and data showing funding and other ties between the newly
formed veterans' group and GOP operatives close to President Bush and
his political adviser, Karl Rove.
The records plainly point to McCain's conclusion: The accusations are
dishonest, dishonorable -- and entirely reminiscent of the lies spread
about McCain in 2000.
Kerry took them on full bore last Thursday, declaring, "I'm not going
to let anyone question my commitment to defending America -- then, now
or ever." It's critical to the American political process that he did
-- and not just for the sake of his presidential campaign. Vicious
falsity cannot be allowed to stand.
The anti-Kerry effort seems to have begun last winter, when Roy F.
Hoffmann, a Swift boat commander in Vietnam, became upset at his
negative portrayal in the book "Tour of Duty." Fellow veteran Adrian
Lonsdale says it was Hoffmann who got him and others involved, and
whose phone calls led them to help from GOP donors and political
operatives in Texas -- including Merrie Spaeth, the spokeswoman for a
group that ran $2 million worth of attack ads against McCain in 2000.
To give you a flavor of the group's inconsistencies: In 1996, Lonsdale
spoke of the bravado and courage of Swift boat officers: "Senator
Kerry was no exception. He was among the finest of those Swift boat
drivers." Yet in this year's TV ad, Lonsdale said Kerry "lacks the
capacity to lead." Veteran George Elliott says in the ad that Kerry
"has not been honest about what happened in Vietnam." Yet Elliott
wrote the Silver Star nomination for Kerry in 1969. In an official
report he wrote: "In a combat environment often requiring independent,
decisive action Lt. j.g. Kerry was unsurpassed. ..."

when his plane exploded.
KEVIN IVES and DON HENRY - known as "The boys on the track" case.
Reports say the boys may have stumbled on the Mena, Arkansas Airport
drug operation. A controversial case, the initial report of death
said, due to falling asleep on railroad track. Later reports claim the
two boys had been slain before being placed on the tracks. Many linked
to the case died before their testimony could come before the Grand
Jury.

Kerry: I Don't Have Time For Briefings
On CNN last night, Larry King interviewed John Kerry on the status of
his campaign for president. On literally the first substantial
question of the interview, Kerry demonstrated why he is unfit for the
presidency during a time of war:
[KING:]Let's get to, first thing's first, news of the day. Tom Ridge
warned today about al Qaeda plans of a large-scale attack on the
United States, didn't increase the -- do you see any politics in this?
What's your
reaction?
KERRY: Well, I haven't been briefed yet, Larry. They have offered to
brief me; I just haven't had time [emph mine -- CE]. But all Americans
are united in our efforts to defeat terrorism.
I believe that John Edwards and I can wage a far more effective war on
terror than George Bush has. I think we can do a better job of making
America safe. But in these days ahead, we all join together no matter
what.
I'd say it's hard for Kerry to know what he can do in waging war on
terrorists if he doesn't even have time to be briefed on our progress
and the threats arrayed against us. Is he kidding? What could possibly
be more important to a nation at war, and to its leadership, than to
maintain a constant pulse on intelligence and military operations? The
Bush administration even offered to get him in for a briefing, and
apparently he refused.
Expect to see this on a Bush campaign ad really soon. It demonstrates
that the Democratic nominee does not take this issue seriously,
especially when you see where he happened to go after his interview

Waving a bottle of wine, she fired off a stream of vulgar sexual
wordplays on Bush's name in a riff about female genitalia, and boasted
that she'd refused to let Team Kerry clear her material. ...
Singer John Mellencamp sang a specially written song that called the
president "just another cheap thug" and ridiculed him as the "Texas
bambino." ...
Also on the Bush-bashing team was comedian Chevy Chase, who claimed
the president is dumb as "an egg-timer" and said Edwards will make
Vice President ***** Cheney look "as bright as a bundt cake" when they
debate next fall. Latin comedian John Leguizamo said he refuses to
believe there are any Hispanic Republicans, claiming that's "an
oxymoron," because "Latins for Republicans - it's like roaches for
Raid."
Kerry could be seen laughing uproariously during part of Goldberg's
tirade - and neither he nor Edwards voiced a single objection to its
tone when they spoke to the crowd. They hailed the fund-raiser as a
great event. Edwards said it was "a great honor" to be there and
insisted, "This campaign will be a celebration of real American
values."
So this is the Democratic ticket -- they feel that vulgar "comedy" and
stuffing money into their pockets from Hollywood elite take a higher
priority than determining the safety and security of our country. If
you
agree with Edwards that this celebrates "real American values," you
have your dream ticket right here. For the rest of us with functioning
cerebral cortexes, this shows without a doubt that the Kerry/Edwards
ticket is a fiasco for America.

(Clinton Admits Lying to Himself Now?)
For the first time ever, ex-President Bill Clinton has admitted that
he once publicly confessed to turning down an offer to have Osama bin
Laden arrested before the 9/11 attacks. But in an interview broadcast
Sunday, he now says that his confession was "not accurate."
"What I said there was wrong, what I said was in error," Clinton told
CNN's Christiane Amanpour, after she asked specifically about a 2002
speech to a Long Island business group where he detailed a 1996 offer
from Sudan for bin Laden's extradition.
The ex-president did not contest - as some of his defenders have -
that his 2002 remarks sounded like a confession.
"I'd said that we were told we couldn't hold him, implying that we had
a chance to get him," he told CNN. "But we didn't. That's not
factually accurate," he insisted again.
The speech was recorded by NewsMax.com, as well as the Long Island
Association, which hosted the event. The LIA has declined to make
their own recording public, though the group has supplied the 9/11
Commission with a videotape.
Just three months ago, when asked about print reports documenting his
bin Laden confession, Clinton told the Commission: "That was a
misquote." But that was before he learned that his remarks were on
tape.
When Amanpour asked him directly about the recording, Clinton said he
had "reconstructed all the records, read all the documents" about the
Sudanese controversey and had concluded his earlier recollection was
wrong.
"Here's what is factually accurate," he told her. "In 1996 - and
before then when we found out about bin Laden - we at first thought he
was a financier of terrorism but not a ringleader . . . When he took
up residence in Sudan, after having been ejected from Saudi Arabia, it
is true that at some point during that period, there was some
discussion in the Justice Department casting a doubt on how long we
could hold him."
But those discussions were not prompted by Sudan's offer, Clinton
said, which he still denies was genuine.
"The idea that the Sudanese offered to hand him over to us is just
absurd," he told CNN. "The idea that they told us when he was leaving
and he was landing in the Gulf, and we could get him at another
airport, is absurd."
While Amanpour interviewed Clinton last week - and CNN reported the
story on its web site Friday, the exchange about the Sudanese offer
was omitted from the report.
NewsMax.com columnist Steve Malzberg, however, caught CNN's early
Sunday morning telecast of the full interview, and broadcast the key
audio over his own popular WABC radio show.

of members of an organized crime empire, as dedicated as body-bomb
suicide muslims, to the eccentric whims of this visibly insane man.
Moonies surreptitiously swell rallies for rightwing causes, clog the
internet forums with their unshakable propaganda-mongering which
cannot be reasoned with, vote as a block and move across state lines
to do it. They even move across international boundaries to meddle in
politics.

I sat in a movie theater watching "Schindler's List," asked myself,
"Why didn't the Jews fight back?"
Now I know why.
I sat in a movie theater, watching "Pearl Harbor" and asked myself,
"Why weren't we prepared?"
Now I know why.
Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil
people.
On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed
themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists
because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated
their captors.
On September 11, thousands of innocent people were murdered because
too many Americans naively reject the reality that some nations are
dedicated to the dominance of others. Many political pundits,
pacifists and media personnel want us to forget the carnage. They say
we must focus on the bravery of the rescuers and ignore the cowardice
of the killers. They implore us to understand the motivation of the
perpetrators. Major television stations have announced they will
assist the healing process by not replaying devastating footage of the
planes crashing into the Twin Towers.
I will not be manipulated.
I will not pretend to understand.
I will not forget.
I will not forget the liberal media who abused freedom of the press to
kick our country when it was vulnerable and hurting.
I will not forget that CBS anchor Dan Rather preceded President Bush's
address to the nation with the snide remark, "No matter how you feel
about him, he is still our president."
I will not forget that ABC TV anchor Peter Jennings questioned
President Bush's motives for not returning immediately to Washington,
DC and commented, "We're all pretty skeptical and cynical about
Washington."
And I will not forget that ABC's Mark Halperin warned if reporters
weren't informed of every little detail of this war, they aren't
"likely -- nor should they be expected -- to show deference."
I will not isolate myself from my fellow Americans by pretending an
attack on the USS Cole in Yemen was not an attack on the United States
of America.
I will not forget the Clinton administration equipped Islamic
terrorists and their supporters with the world's most sophisticated
telecommunications equipment and encryption technology, thereby
compromising America's ability to trace terrorist radio, cell phone,
land lines, faxes and modem communications.
I will not be appeased with pointless, quick retaliatory strikes like
those perfected by the previous administration.
I will not be comforted by "feel-good, do nothing" regulations like
the silly, "Have your bags been under your control?" question at the
airport.
I will not be influenced by so called,"antiwar demonstrators" who
exploit the right of expression to chant anti-American obscenities.
I will not forget the moral victory handed the North Vietnamese by
American war protesters who reviled and spat upon the returning
soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines.
I will not be softened by the wishful thinking of pacifists who chose
reassurance over reality.
I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told
the Labor Party conference, "They have no moral inhibition on the
slaughter of the innocent. If they could have murdered not 7,000 but
70,000, does anyone doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it?
There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds,
no point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it
or be defeated by it. And defeat it we must!"
I will force myself to:
-hear the weeping
-feel the helplessness
-imagine the terror
-sense the panic
-smell the burning flesh
- experience the loss
- remember the hatred.
I sat in a movie theater, watching "Private Ryan" and asked myself,
"Where did they find the courage?"
Now I know.
We have no choice. Living without liberty is not living.
