US bans Vegemite
Kelvin Healey
October 22, 2006 12:00am
Article from: The Sunday Mail (Qld)
THE United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging Australian
expatriates there.
The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains folate,
which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.
Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up recently
and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on toast for
breakfast.
Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, Canada, said
he was stunned when searched while crossing the US border recently.
"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty
said.
"I was flabbergasted." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About
Australia in San Antonio, Texas, said he had been forced to stop
importing Vegemite six months ago.
"We have completely stopped bringing it in," he said.
"(US authorities) have made a stance and there is nothing that can be
done about it."

The US is officialy FUCKED IN THE HEAD!
You can bring in guns and knives, but not Vegemite???
And before I'd had a chance to try the stuff! What's it like, Michael?
Can you describe it by comparing the flavor to something else, or is it
a true original?
It is an acquired taste, lemme tell you!
My sister now lives in Canada where it is still legal, and her hubby
can't stand the stuff!
Take a handful of salt, mix in some bitumen until it attains the
consitency of dog *****.
Flavour with soy sauce to taste.
I actually can't go without it for more than a few days, although
since the yankee firm Kraft bought out the original Vegemite, I get
locally brewed copies of it.
It really is a lot like thick soy sauce flavoured with lots of yeast,
in a paste.
It is made from "yeast extract", which means that our beer breweries
supply the main ingredient.
No wonder aussies love it!
Curious that althoug a yank firm now makes it, it isn't allowed in the
US.
I bet that if Kraft made chemical weapons for the current batch of
genocidal maniacs in the White House, it would not be on the banned
list.

US bans Vegemite

THE United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging
Australian expatriates there.
The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains
folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.
Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up
recently and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on

Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary,
Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US

"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr

"I was flabbergasted." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About

On a slightly different topic...is "Foster's" really Australian for
"beer"? =)
Oh yeah--according to Wikipedia's "Vegemite" entry:
"In October 2006, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported that Vegemite is
banned in the USA, with Customs officials going so far as to even search
Australians for Vegemite when they enter the country, but later reports
cast doubt on the claim. The Food and Drug Administration later stated
there was no import ban on Vegemite, and that it was never pulled from
American supermarket shelves."

US bans Vegemite
Kelvin Healey
October 22, 2006 12:00am
Article from: The Sunday Mail (Qld)
THE United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging
Australian expatriates there.
The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains
folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.
Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up
recently and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on
toast for breakfast.
Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary,
Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US
border recently.
"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr
Fogarty said.
"I was flabbergasted." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About
Australia in San Antonio, Texas, said he had been forced to stop
importing Vegemite six months ago.
"We have completely stopped bringing it in," he said.
"(US authorities) have made a stance and there is nothing that can
be done about it."
That's it.
The US is officialy FUCKED IN THE HEAD!
You can bring in guns and knives, but not Vegemite???
And before I'd had a chance to try the stuff! What's it like, Michael?
Can you describe it by comparing the flavor to something else, or is
it a true original?
It is an acquired taste, lemme tell you!
My sister now lives in Canada where it is still legal, and her hubby
can't stand the stuff!
Take a handful of salt, mix in some bitumen until it attains the
consitency of dog *****.
Flavour with soy sauce to taste.
On a slightly different topic...is "Foster's" really Australian for
"beer"? =)
It *used* to be, back in the 1970s for some unknown reason.
Now it is Australian for Ipecac.

I actually can't go without it for more than a few days, although
since the yankee firm Kraft bought out the original Vegemite, I get
locally brewed copies of it.
I guess I'll just have to fly over there and visit y'all, then. <g>
It really is a lot like thick soy sauce flavoured with lots of yeast,
in a paste.
It is made from "yeast extract", which means that our beer breweries
supply the main ingredient.
No wonder aussies love it!
Amazing how so many different cultures take similar turns. Don't the
Japanese have some sort of dish cooked up with the leftover mash from
sake brewing?
Curious that althoug a yank firm now makes it, it isn't allowed in the
US.
I bet that if Kraft made chemical weapons for the current batch of
genocidal maniacs in the White House, it would not be on the banned
list.
Not touching that bet. I'd lose.

That's it.
I guess I'll just have to fly over there and visit y'all, then. <g>
Your arms will get tired.
You mean MacDonald's-san?
Curious that althoug a yank firm now makes it, it isn't allowed in the
US.
I bet that if Kraft made chemical weapons for the current batch of
genocidal maniacs in the White House, it would not be on the banned
list.
Not touching that bet. I'd lose.

It is very dangerous trying to parody this topic.
No matter what you say, it corresponds with large lumps of reality.
