Back again and loving it. |
Well, it's so nice to see somethings just never change. As is the case
with alt.atheism.
Still the daily crop of fundies with their heads up their butts. Xters
out to save the world, Moronic Muslims, never wrong, never right, never
honest. Pseudo scientist with "proof" of gods, floods, failures of
evolution, souls, ad nausium. Jehovhas Whitless telling us why
evolution, or blood, are evil. (Yes Jabers, I'm takking about you).
Thrown together with the usual assortment of bigotted assholes who hate
everything that is not them, and you have the fun times and high spirits
that is alt.atheism.
Well, the Rev has been a busy little camper over the last year. Having
survied the great reccesion of our favorite "Son of a Bush", I was able
to pull in another systems administrators position on contract. Funny
thing, it was only supposed to be for 3 months, that was a year and 2
months ago. It may not pay as much as I used to get, (bout 1/2 of 1999
wages), but it's enough. And it's IT. Now if it will just stay on
shore and not go some where over seas, I'll be real happy.
The child of evil, (aka my son), turned 18 this month. Some of you may
recall, the spawn of doubt was being home schooled by mom and I. Well,
graduate up a bit from happy home schooled teenager, to full blown,
hormone raging college man, and you get the idea. He's in his second
session now, doing well, and on the prowl. (Those of you that have
daughters attending GCC in Glendale AZ, may want to warn them about a
long haired, dragon wearing shintoist).
The wife of the devil, (aka my wife), and I celibrated 20 years this
last May. We find it hard to accept, or believe, that we have survived
20 years of marriage, and 18 years of being parents. The gray is
starting to show clearly on both of us. She as finished Real Estate
school, and is trying to pass the test for her state license. Since
Arizona just changed that test, the rules are a little fuzzy.
That's about it from the desert. I was able to bring back up my news
server on a new ISP this month, and of course it sucked down some
100,000 messages from a.a almost immediatly. I was finally able to
start posting again yesterday. So I thought I'd stop in today and let
you all know, I've missed this group.

You would think hat god would at least pick a spokesperson who could make a
web page worth a damn. Not one, but two shitty backgrounds on the same page.
And what is the deal with the shitty looking sword and the lion? And the
scanned document at the bottom just looks like crap. Don't you think that
god expects a little more from you?

As a matter of fact, yes.
First up, go here:
http://www.cert.org
They have many good articles about securing your system on broad band,
and their mailing list for virii and vuln's is great.
Then, for a firewall on a floppy disk, visit these good people:
http://www.closedbsd.org/
If that is not to your liking, i.e., your run the vole's system,
Windoze, I would recommend Zone Alarm Pro. Use it on my wife's system,
have not had a problem in the least. If you are running Windoze, make
damn sure, you have the Auto Update feature turned on if possible. (XP
has it under My Computer Properties.) Keep those machines patched and
up to date.
If however you use a real computer system, aka Unix / Linux, then instal
and configure tcpd, ipf, ipfw, ipchains or any combination there of.
The ipchains program is only for Linux. the two ipf's are for just
about all Unix's, and tcpd will run on both Linux and Unix.

We're on cable access now. Any ideas why my wife's computer times out
after a short time? (hers is wireless to the router)
Any suggestions as to a source written in english listing the steps
necessary to safeguard the network and keep drive-bys from accessing the
system?
Ta.
As a matter of fact, yes.
Cool.... :)
First up, go here:
http://www.cert.org
They have many good articles about securing your system on broad band,
and their mailing list for virii and vuln's is great.
Then, for a firewall on a floppy disk, visit these good people:
http://www.closedbsd.org/
Looks like I've got some reading to do.
If that is not to your liking, i.e., your run the vole's system,
Windoze, I would recommend Zone Alarm Pro. Use it on my wife's system,
have not had a problem in the least. If you are running Windoze, make
damn sure, you have the Auto Update feature turned on if possible. (XP
has it under My Computer Properties.) Keep those machines patched and
up to date.
Currently, I use std Zone Alarm.
Thank you, Karl.
