Bani Kansan at Harvard |
At breakfast I heard that Kerry of Massachusetts had picked Edwards of
North Carolina as his running mate. Our trip looking at prospective colleges
for Caterina had started at Duke University in North Carolina and its northern
end is here in the Boston area.
Today, July 6, is the birthday of President George W. Bush, whereas
President Kennedy (from Massachusetts) was born on May 29. The mid-point
between these two dates is June 17. I was trying to figure out what important
event happened on June 17, but could not place it.
We then went to Brookline for a short visit to Hellenic College and Holy
Cross Theological Seminary. Brookline happens to be JFK's birth place.
Then we went to Harvard, JFK's Alma Mater. Our tour guide was from
Wichita, Kansas, where I was born again as a Conspiracy theorist. Her name was
Nancy, the diminutive form of Anne and the feast day of St. Anne is December 9,
Day 343 of the year. As I was thinking that, we passed the Cambridge, MA, Fire
Department that flew a banner with the words "343 FDNY" on it, referring to the
343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001:

Then Nancy brought us to the statue of Harvard's founder, John Harvard.
I looked behind the statue and saw that it had been dedicated on June 17, 1883.
Aha, finally!!! June 17, the mid-point between JFK's birthday, May 29,
and George W.'s birthday, July 6.
Then I remembered that the mid-point between Caterina's birth date, May
14, 1987, and Irenie's birth date, July 22, 1989, is June 17 again, in 1988.
In the late afternoon we went to downtown Boston to meet our friends
Peter and Marisa and their two daughters. They are looking at colleges, too,
in the Boston area.
We had dinner at the original "Cheers" bar on Beacon Street, that happens
to be right next to the Consulate General of Greece.
Finally, we drove by the Massachusetts State House, again on Beacon
Street.
John Forbes Kerry (JFK) happened to be the Lieutenant Governor to the
Greek-American Michael Dukakis when the latter was Governor of Massachusetts.

I love reading your tour, as I can relate to some of the places you are
visiting.
Other things happened on June 17: the Watergate breakin was on June 17,
1972 that started the events that lead to the resignation of President
Nixon. 6/17/64 my beloved father passed away, also a politician and
elected public office holder.
77 is also an important number in our family. And I am living in
Washington, at that 77 geographic number you related. Relatives of mine
are in Boston where you visited, so it is a wonderful area. Your
relative would like Boston. One of my relations graduated from Boston
University, lead by John Silberman at the time, and another works for
MIT. My daugter and I visited Harvard Square and ate in the heat of the
summer, in a recent year, in the outside cafe that borders that area
near the T. Others played lively games of chess. Another few years
ago, we enjoyed the 4th of July celebrations at the Esplanade.
Boston is an educational joy. It is also a friendly urban area to get
around in. I would say what one chooses depends on what a person wants
to study, combined with the best scholarships and grants you can get, as
well as the sense of belonging that one gets when you visit a campus.
Also, it depends on what you think your relative would be comfortable
in. Another issue is whether you think she would be safe, and maintain
being a student and not distracted by the many things that go on among
college students.
Many years ago, I chose another university, here in Washington, because
they had the best scolasticism-philosophy type courses combined with a
sense of being in Little Rome, lots of churches, religious houses, etc.
I have moved on to other things and a different life, never did enter a
monastery, except to visit.
Best wishes, I hope she finds the right place. This is an important
time. It really makes a difference in one's future.

Thank you for your comments, Minerva, and the Watergate break-in date.
We are also looking at some universities closer to home, in Texas. Our
daughter Caterina will also apply at Caltech, where I got my Ph.D., Stanford,
etc.
