what's that?" Guiliani, John "The operation was painless" McCain, Fred
"Look at me, I'm on TV!" Thompson, Sam "I'm so religious, I could just
pee" Brownback, and Tom "***** Mexicans!" Tancredo...
Have you ever seen a bigger bunch of buffoons?

Well...The Democrats have Hillary "This Office
for Sale" Clinton, and Barack "I'm an antiwar
candidate who plans to invade the only nuclear
Muslim nation" Obama. ;-)
The Republicans are in a fix because their
typical, perennial successful lies have become
associated with the Bush administration, and that
contamination cannot be quickly washed off.
Alas, I fear that by the 2012 election, Americans
will be back to swallowing GOP canards about "tax
and spend Democrats" and "tough on crime
Republicans" and "protecting families from
terrorism" and "family values" and "small
government."

I'm not going to defend Hillary except I have to say she's getting better
at the game. I have to give her that.
Obama, on the other hand, is being trashed unfairly. By, well, Hillary.
He's being consistent and I agree with him. The *point* was to get bin
Laden and his organization. Pakistan is fucking us over and not even
using lube. We should have *never* cozied up to them. And I see no reason
to keep letting him ***** us over, sell nuclear secrets and materials to
anybody with cash, and harbor Al Qaeda (and, for that matter, threaten
the world's biggest democracy who is *supposed* to be our friend and
ally).
We should have never let Al Qaeda escape to begin with. But that's not
Obama's fault.
You know that we knew about an Al Qaeda leadership meeting back in 2005
and did nothing? Rove explained that this was because we don't take
military action inside the borders of a soveriegn nation without their
permission.
(After a brief moment of murmuring, the audience laughed. Actually
laughed. Rove acted as if he were in on the joke instead of *being* the
joke. The people in that administration are so disconnected from reality
now that it never occurred to them to not admit they'd decided not to go
after Al Qaeda when they had the chance. The explanation--such as it was--
actually made sense to them. Rove was actually startled, at first, that
people were laughing.)
Didn't we go after the Taliban for harboring Al Qaeda? Even if they
weren't really all that fond of bin Laden and were talking to SA to ship
him home? (This, admittedly, we found out later. But we might have been
able to finesse the Afghan situation if we didn't have our heads up our
butts.)
And we went after Iraq for the flimsiest claim that they maybe, kinda
sorta, looked like they may have glanced at bin Laden once.
Pakistan, on the other hand, who we KNOW (and they've ADMITTED) sold
nuclear secrets and materials to other countries (N. Korea included) and
who we KNOW is harboring Al Qaeda, we leave them alone.
Again, this is the message being sent:
"Get nukes. The US will leave you alone then."
I'm with Obama on this one. I see no reason to play footsie with somebody
who's stabbing us in the back. We're only managing to send the message
that we're weak and that everybody better get a nuke program fast as they
can. Then they can double deal us all day and we'll sit around twiddling
our thumbs.
By the way, Obama has never been "anti-war" across the board. He's been
against the Iraq war. That's not inconsistent. The Iraq war was
unnecessary, counter-productive, and we've let the people who *actually*
attacked us go free.
Hillary, I'm afraid, is essentially promising business as usual. It's
part of her "moderating" game. She's already positioning herself for the
election before she's even been nominated.
Obama actually missed his opening to go after her with, "You mean you
don't want to go after the people who attacked us?"
Her camp is getting away with spinning him as "irresposible" when the
most irresponsible thing I can think of is to reward nations who ***** us
over.

The Republicans are in a fix because their typical, perennial successful
lies have become associated with the Bush administration, and that
contamination cannot be quickly washed off.

Alas, I fear that by the 2012 election, Americans will be back to
swallowing GOP canards about "tax and spend Democrats" and "tough on
crime Republicans" and "protecting families from terrorism" and "family
values" and "small government."

Or not.
This country has those big, tidal shifts from left to right and vice
versa every so often. The numbers for the GOP in general are lower now
than at any time since polls have tracked attitudes toward parties.
In fact, the numbers look worse for the GOP than they did for the
Democrats when the big rightward shift happened that put the GOP in the
majority for 12 years. '08 has the potential for being a seriously nasty
rout...
