Very well done, I thought. What was your favorite part?
I liked the Bhuddist viewpoint, that heaven and hell were here and now.
Too bad they believe in reincarnation, that kind of kills it. I was glad
to see the short segment on atheism, and the burden of proof issue, the
theist version of which surfaced in the NDE segment - you can't prove I
didn't have this experience, therefore I did.

Those evangelicals were/are fucking CREEPY - talk about pod people. If
that's not a cult nothing is.

You bet your Christmas bells they're a cult!
And they can be merciless to anyone who strays from the dogma.
For instance, Carlton Pearson was the golden child from Oral
Roberts University, until he did a wicked thing: he started to
research the history of the Bible and the methods that were used
to determine what became "holy scripture" and what did not, and
he refused to ignore the implications of what he learned. The
result was his rejection of the reality of Hell.
Pearson became doubly cursed by his former supporters, first for
the general sin of rejecting "God's holy truth" (I.e., for
straying outside the sectarian straightjacket of evangelical
belief) and moreso for the threat his ideas posed to one of the
foundations on which evangelical Christianity is built: the
threat of eternal damnation. Howevermuch concepts such as love
and morality are tossed about, evangelical leaders know that the
majority of people come to church (and heed the directives of
the self-appointed lieutenants of Jesus) because they want to
save their souls from the flames. Without that threat,
evangelicalism would disintegrate within a generation. Hellfire
Christianity is 90% stick, 10% carrot.
Come to think of it, Pearson is triply cursed: his doctrine of
"Inclusion" holds that all people will eventually be redeemed;
this brushes dangerously close to the beliefs of certain Roman
Catholic theologians who contend that eternal punishment is
contrary to the concept of a loving God. And evangelicals have
as much affection for the RCC as a vampires have for garlic. :)

The NDE experiences and others do happen.
That is why we have religion, these brain farts do
happen and reinforce the notion of religion. I myself
have experienced deja vu, so we have such experiences,
the thing is, what do such things mean? Not religion
is the answer, but why we have religion.
Basically this is one of the big failings of atheism,
the lack of understanding of the many different sorts
of such effects that do indeed feed religion, the
personal, deeply felt, not easily ignored experiences
of people.
I have been sort of looking at the literature off
and on for years now, its surprising how little really
good material there is.
In the last few years, researchers have begun to understand
that god seems to be a built-in illusion in many human brains,
there is a growing literature here.
But much older literature seems all but forgotten.

The one thing that points to the fact that NDE is an experience that is
confined to a dying brain is the fact that people who see religious
things in their dream always see things that pertain to their own
religion. For example, a Christian will *never* see the 72 virgins
waiting for him in paradise, and a Muslim will not walk with Jesus. A
lot of them see a member of their family, who is dead. And though there
is no way to prove it, they all see what they expect heaven to be.
Which leads to another dilemma. Why don't any of the NDE trippers see
themselves being lowered into hell?

Well, of COURSE that's what I'd see since only my religion is true (or,
alternatively, because all religions are really true but people just have
differing views of them/god.)

Which leads to another dilemma. Why don't any of the NDE trippers see

Becuase I've been SAVED (Praise the LAWD!) and thus wouldn't see that. And
if you aren't saved, then this is gawd's wake-up call to you where he's
showing you what awaits you if you'll only BELIEVE IN HIM!

I am sure I could, but I am udderly unable to do so at the moment, I am under
a no-pun court order at this time. Something about causing a riot or
something a few weeks ago.
Twern't no riot, but I should have known better than to tell a real stinker
of a pun in the mall, especially during the holidays. I still can't believe
that 14 businesses got trashed in the stampede. But that is power-shopping,
it did clear out enough people I was able to get that last minute shopping
in, the rest just could not handle the punishment.
