Well, if you read the article, you see that her motive was rage
following the fact that the guy had erased all the songs from the
iPod, claiming that she had pirated music. Apparently it had taken
her months to put the collection together.
The smug moralistic gall it would take to vandalize someone's
equipment on the grounds that some (or even all) of it was obtained in
violation of copyright laws makes me believe he was probably some kind
of Fundy.
Sounds like a great couple - an insufferable pretentious twit, and a
homicidal petty thief.

Me, I wouldn't care; mine gets partly reloaded every few days. I have a
"core" set of bands (Rush and Metallica, mostly, but quite a few others)
that takes up maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the 4 gigs my Mini has. The rest of the
room is usually stuff I haven't listened to in a while, for variety.
Only takes a few minutes...or should only take a few. But almost 3 weeks
ago, my 80-gig "archives" drive shat itself and took out all the core
songs, all my digital photos, several writing projects, and all my
"pending" software downloads (XNews reader, Thunderbird Mail, FireFox
browser, and tons of post-Katrina pictures from NOAA, among other
things). The only things that can be restored? The songs. Think I'd have
bludgeoned a person over that!

YIKES! Bummer. I had a CD which contained digital photos of tons of boxes,
etc. that I'd painted. Somehow the bugger became corrupt. I was pretty
pissed as I like to have a record of things I've done, but what are you
gonna do?

I'm considering getting a credit card (I've never had one), then locating
a good recovery service; it's not cheap, but it'd be worth it just for
the photos alone (some 600 or so). That's assuming they can find any of
it on the disk itself.
