In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Two hundred
years ago, you would have had no difficulty in finding any number of
people who believed that the creation of the world took just under a
week, happened a few thousand years ago and was the work of one
single, all-powerful, intelligent creator. Then along came Darwin with
his theory of evolution, in which the forces of natural selection
worked on a common ancestor to produce the multitudes of species that
we now see around us. And that, you might think, was that.
And yet the creationist lobby - those who believe in the literal truth
of the Genesis story - has become increasingly active in recent years,
especially in the US. There are now suspicions that creationism has
found a toe-hold in British schools. Even without that threat,
scientists struggle with the question of how to reconcile their
intellectual discipline with a faith that might ultimately undermine
it.
