Well?

Not necessarily, but the religion that develops around the
belief can be.

Well?

Honestly... a bit extreme. There IS a mental illness where a person is
REALLY religious and its a brain center that seems to activate more for them
than others. Was on a PBS program.
The attachment to God is really a cultural thing... its hard to separate
yourself from what your family raised you to believe. Many atheists (like
myself) simply never talk to their family about being an atheist, largely
because I consider the issue of religion to be closed... I tend to not care
as much about it as before, unless it's coming from the biblical literalists
of our time. Then I get nasty.

Well?

I honestly don't think of it as a mental illness. The majority of my
friends and family believe in a god and I know for a fact that none of them
are mentally ill.

Prayer For Mental Health:
St. Dymphna, powerful patroness of all who are afflicted mentally and

and rest. Help me to learn how to entrust all my fears and worries into His
hands, and to place all my confidence in Christ's love for me.

No. Most people who believe in God are socially conditioned to do so.
Most people who believe in God have never actually had spiritual
experiences that bring them closer to 'God'. They believe in order to
conform, which is a basic human instinct for good evolutionary reasons.
Mental illness, OTOH, is about having a 'disturbed' mind due to
distorted and nonconforming thinking processes and behavioural patterns
which may be linked to chemical imbalances in the brain. They may also
be induced by environmental factors such as family disfunction and
abuse. One example of such abuse is excessive religious brainwashing.
The electrical/electromagnetic perturbances which cause both epilepsy
and spiritual experiences of God (or whatever - if anything - one is
conditioned to interpret such experiences as being) are not classed as
mental illness, just epilepsy.
Intense spiritual experiences can be induced using a Transcranial
Magnetic Stimulator. See:
