Bert Trautmann OBE |
I heard on the BBC WOrld Service news that Bert Trautmann was awarded
an OBE.
He was born in Bremen, and captured by the British during WW2, and
confined to a prisoner-of-war camp. Where he played football (soccer)
with the other prisoners, as a goalkeeper. After the war he stayed in
Britain, joined a local team and then Manchester City. He was one of
the great goalkeepers.
He was injured in the 1956 FA Cup Final, and afterwards it was
discovered that he had continued playing with a broken neck. Very
lucky, because he could have been killed at any time.
Congratulations of one of my boyhood heroes.
