Object: Better than Prayer? The Emotional Freedom Technique!
I'm about a month behind reading the local paper; I came across this gem
of amusing woo-woo "spiritual healing" this morning, from April 29.
Basically, this guy says you can tap accupuncture points and say the
magic phrase, "Even though I have this problem I'm going to do my best to
accept myself."
Doesn't fix the problem, apparently, but you supposedly feel better about
it.
He calls it EFT...the Emotional Freedom Technique.
I don't even know where to begin mocking this (long day at work)--so I
offer it up for everyone to play with.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Before the muffled pounding of more than 100 people
thumping their chests like Tarzan filled the church, there was soothing
flute music.
The chatter of retirees and stay-at-home moms, mechanics and post office
workers mingled with the music in the dimly lighted sanctuary of Unity
Church of Overland Park, Kan. Two volunteers carrying bags of junk food —
one with potato chips, one with chocolate — walked down the aisles
offering treats.
They weren't expecting treats. They came to learn how to rewire their
brains, how to clear all blocks by tapping on acupuncture points on their
bodies, so their energy could flow and they could feel on top of the
world.
That's what the seminar description said.
So let the tapping demonstration begin.
Led by the man standing at the front of the church, Overland Park
psychologist Garland Landrith — friendly face behind wire rims, Swarovski
crystal buttons glittering on his dress shirt — they closed their eyes.
First they drummed with their fingertips on their foreheads, just above
the eyebrows.
Then they tapped the sides of their faces, right next to their eyes.
Following Landrith's cues, they chanted affirmations aloud as they
tapped, moving to spots lower and lower on their bodies, head to toe.
Tap tap tap under the eyes.
"Even though I have this problem I'm going to do the best I can to accept
myself," they chanted.
Under the chin.
"Even though this problem doesn't go away, I am going to do the best I
can to accept myself."
Under the arms. Another affirmation.
Landrith had just spent the last hour making the case that people can
create miracles with their minds, acknowledging at times that he knew he
was preaching to the choir, here inside a Unity church.
When the longtime researcher spoke of quantum field technology, eyes that
might have otherwise glazed over in a classroom watched him closely,
intently, eagerly, like an "Oprah" audience.
Some had seen Landrith in the 2004 film "What the (Bleep) Do We Know?"
interviewed along with quantum physics experts and New Age authors about
the power of positive thinking.
For two years he's traveled the country teaching people, literally, how
to tap into that power.
He's taught nearly 2,000 people how to tap, how to use it before job
interviews, school tests or speaking in public, how it can, for some,
break addictions to food, alcohol and other things that are harmful in
excess.
So rapt was the audience that the church's minister had to remind
Landrith that it was after 9 p.m., time to leave.

Not defending it, but it could possibly be another manifestation of the
placebo effect.
If you keep telling youself how bad you feel, you'll soon get depressed.
The reverse could also be true.
The tapping... well that's a different story.

Actually, the Fredericksburg link was the first one I grabbed online when I
went Google-hunting for the story. I didn't feel like trying to search the
local paper's online "archive"--sometimes it'll deny that there's anything
there if it's more than a week old. Some archive!
