'Bible as hate speech' bill passes

Canada's House of Commons passed a controversial bill yesterday
opposed by religious believers and free-speech advocates who say it
will criminalize public expression against homosexual behavior.
The bill, passed 141-110, adds sexual orientation as a protected
category in Canada's genocide and hate-crimes legislation, which
carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
Svend Robinson
"It's been a good week for equality in Canada," said the bill's
sponsor, Svend Robinson, an openly homosexual member of Parliament.
The vote came just a day after MPs narrowly defeated a nonbinding
motion reaffirming marriage is between a man and woman only.
As WorldNetDaily reported, opponents fear if Robinson's bill becomes
law, the Bible will be deemed "hate literature" under the criminal
code in certain instances, as evidenced by the case of a Saskatchewan
man fined by a provincial human-rights tribunal for taking out a
newspaper ad with Scripture references to verses about homosexuality.
"I was not surprised it passed, because we have a morally bankrupt
government which cannot see past its bizarre liberal ideology," Brian
Rushfeldt, executive director of the Canada Family Action Coalition,
told WorldNetDaily.
The bill now goes to the Senate, which usually rubber stamps the
House's legislation. Rushfeldt said he hopes the Senate will at least
debate the issue and bring up "inherent dangers" in the bill not
discussed in the House, but thinks that is not likely.
The legislation then is signed into law by the governor general, who
represents the queen.
Robinson insisted an amendment protects religious expression, but
opponents note recent court cases in which judges have favored
homosexual rights when they clash with the rights of religious
believers.
Some members of Parliament called it a "dangerous" law that muzzles
free speech, including Liberal Party member John McKay, who dubbed it
a "chill bill."
"Anybody who has views on homosexuality that differ from Svend
Robinson's will be exposed rather dramatically to the joys of the
Criminal Code," he said, according to the Edmonton Sun.
Rushfeldt contends one of the law's dangers is the term "sexual
orientation" is not defined. He noted the American Psychiatric
Association lists 24 behaviors under "sexual orientation." They
include polygamy, bestiality and pedophilia.
"So if in fact the term does include pedophilia, the law protects it
[from 'hate speech']," he said.
Robinson said fears that freedom of speech and religion will suffer
are "a mask for homophobia for people who don't want to be honest
about the real reason why they don't want to include sexual
orientation in the law," according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.
He said he regularly receives hateful e-mails, the Toronto paper said,
and his Burnaby, B.C., office was trashed in 1988 when he became
Canada's first openly homosexual member of Parliament.

Canada's House of Commons passed a controversial bill yesterday
opposed by religious believers and free-speech advocates who say it
will criminalize public expression against homosexual behavior.
Given that this is from WingNutDaily and not a real
news agency, the veracity of free speech groups
being against the law should be verified.
And its references to women, to non-jews, to money
lenders, to the rich....
"I was not surprised it passed, because we have a morally bankrupt
government which cannot see past its bizarre liberal ideology," Brian
Rushfeldt, executive director of the Canada Family Action Coalition,
told WorldNetDaily.
Rushfeldt? Sounds like a hybrid of Limbaugh and
the (other) Donald. Maybe they're closet queens....
The bill now goes to the Senate, which usually rubber stamps the
House's legislation.
Not necessarily in this case. The senate is still
stacked with political payoff appointments by
Lyin Baloney...I mean, Brian Mulroney. It's full
of right wingers, though many are not as rabid
as some in the god squad.
Robinson insisted an amendment protects religious expression, but
opponents note recent court cases in which judges have favored
homosexual rights when they clash with the rights of religious
believers.
Making out is more believable than the made up.
"Anybody who has views on homosexuality that differ from Svend
Robinson's will be exposed rather dramatically to the joys of the
Criminal Code," he said, according to the Edmonton Sun.
Of course he's from Edmonton. Alberta is the
bible belt and mor(m)on hellhole of Canada.
"No, I'm not inferring that gays are paedophiles,"
Rushfeldt said later, "I'm saying it outright."
He said he regularly receives hateful e-mails, the Toronto paper said,
and his Burnaby, B.C., office was trashed in 1988 when he became
Canada's first openly homosexual member of Parliament.
His offices have been the targets of vandalism and
attempted arson over the years.

From everything I've been reading lately, one or two drinks a day is
actually beneficial, health wise. Just
don't drive in pursuit of your health. :c)

I'm aware of the health benefits of one or two drinks, but there are
some kooks associated with the CSPI who basically want a
neo-Prohibition. I think there are some of those kooks actually
calling for zero-tolerance DUI laws (meaning one sip = legally drunk)
for all drivers, including adults. I am sure that within 10 years, a
parent will have their children taken away by CPS for the mere
presence of any alcoholic beverage in their own home, whether or not
it is kept in an area where children can't get to it (as in a liquor
locker).
There are also some health benefits from eating certain meats, but
radical groups like PETA and the ALF want forced vegetarianism to be
the norm here in the US of A. If somebody wants to be a vegetarian, I
am okay with that. What I am NOT okay with is these radicals trying to
force me to conform to their standards. There are only two logical
answers : Either we live in a free society where people can CHOOSE to
be vegetarian or not be vegetarian, or we live in a totalitarian
society where people are FORCED to be vegetarian. The day America
becomes totalitarian is the day that I say goodbye to America.
And speaking of meats, I am sure that PETA is already calling for an
immediate ban on all red meat in America due to the Mad Cow case in
Washington state.

Seems like we tried that once already, the results were... questionable at
best.

There are always going to be extremists, which is why you have to take them
down a peg or two every once in a while. As far as CPS, it's hard to get
them to do the job they're supposed to do, so I'm not sure that they present
much of a problem.

Nobody really takes PETA seriously anymore, not since they started using
bombs to make their point.

When any religious text is used to trample on the civil rights of people,
it is hate speech. This is true in Canada and in most of Europe.

It's just true. That it's not law in some countries doesn't make it
less true.

IOW, the freedom of ideas is not welcome in Canada and in most of Eurpope,
sounds like fascism.

In both Europe and Canada there is no way you would get into trouble for
stating that there are Biblical passages that can be read as a condemnation
of homosexuality, just as some passages oppose eating pork.
What you probably can't get away with is standing on a street corner,
waving a Bible, and screaming at a guy walking down the street with
his boyfriend, saying they are both sinners who will rot in hell and
should be put to death.
Is this sort of distinction that difficult to grasp?

Which "freedom" is being held in question? The freedom to persecute
one's neighbors by reason of ethnicity or sexuality or (in John
Ashcroft's case) carrying a "World Almanac?"
Clearly you have not the remotest notion of what constitutes Fascism
or, for that matter, what is meant by "freedom" or even "ideas."
