Bible: How many translations are there? |
I read somewhere, a long time ago, that there were something along the
lines of 25,000 different Bibles published.
Can anybody confirm that? Or have link to that stat?
Thanks.

Meaning there's a no better than 1/25,000 chance the believers are right.
Oddly enough, 25,000 is exactly the number of rpm that Pascal is performing
in his grave I'll wager.
Then, of course, each believer has their own interpretation. So really
there's as many different bibles as there are christians.
You know, I wish they'd call it what it is. Editing. Each believer has their
own edit of the bible even though they don't change the words. They change
the meanings of the words and phrases and stories to meet their own idea of
what the bible should say, and insist that's what the god meant.
Arrogance, thy name is Christianity.

That's actually part of the point I'm trying to make. I just need to
reconfirm some of the numbers. Like I said I heard it a long time ago.
I'm just trying to get some facts into a debate I'm having.

http://www.wycliffe.org/wbt-usa/trangoal.htm
The Wycliffe Bible Translators say the number is more like 1500 languages,
some only have the New Testament.
578 languages in the New Testament
1246 languages they are currently working in
1571 languages they have ever worked in

The number will also vary depending on what you mean by "bible." Would
English translations of Jewish scriptures, translated and arranged for use
by English speaking Jews, be counted as a "Bible"? Many translations exist
only as New Testament, would those be counted as a "Bible"? And what about
the cult variants? Would the "inspired" translations of the Mormons,
Jehovahs' Witnesses or Unification Church count as "Bibles"?

I guess any text derived form Old or New testament that considersitself
a translation. Mormon, JW, and Unification would apply.
Do you know of anywhere that this is documented?
