Object: Bible quote of the day for Aug 1 (This night your soul is required of you)
Luke 12:13-21
13 One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, bid my brother divide
the inheritance with me." 14 But he said to him, "Man, who made me a
judge or divider over you?" 15 And he said to them, "Take heed, and
beware of all covetousness; for a man's life does not consist in the
abundance of his possessions." 16 And he told them a parable, saying,
"The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; 17 and he thought
to himself, `What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?'
18 And he said, `I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build
larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And
I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many
years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' 20 But God said to him,
`Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you
have prepared, whose will they be?' 21 So is he who lays up treasure
for himself, and is not rich toward God."
---------------------------------
Many christians look at this passage-- and others in the gospels-- and
conclude that Jesus did not say that the rich cannot enter the
kingdom. Jesus said it would be difficult, but he did not say it
would be impossible. In this way, many justify their own pursuit and
accumulation of earthly wealth. For example, here he admonishes those
who lay up treasure for themselves, but are not rich towards God. One
might conclude that if you are rich towards god, irrespective of your
treasure, you are still doing right.
I think one would have to have their head in the sand to not recognize
the powerful, and stern, warnings that Jesus gives us regarding the
influence of money and material possessions on our lives. It is not a
positive effect. These are things that can only get in the way of our
spiritual development, and in the plan that God has for us. We are not
here to make money.
Notice he does not except those who make a lot of money, but then give
some to the poor, or to the church. No exceptions are made. Not for
the lawyer, the doctor, or the preacher. We are drawn inevitably to
the conclusion that the pursuit and accumulation of earthly wealth is
not a good thing. It can only have a negative, and potentially
disastrous, effect on our lives. If your land gives forth to you
plentifully, share abundantly while you can. You know not when your
hour will come.

Gee, what's the dollar value we're all supposed to stay under so as not to

don't even have the real name of the author so how the hell

If not for the double standard that exists when discussing the history of
Christianity, I might mention that St. Luke appears many times in St. Paul's
epistles, or that it's obvious to any scholar that the Gospel of Luke and
the Acts are by the same author, who was a physician (as St. Luke was), or
that St. Jerome, Eusebius, Origen, St. Justin, Tertullian, St. Irenęus and
Clement (who says the principal sources were Sts. Peter and James) all
concur, or that a pagan named Celsus who attacked the Christian faith, says
in his writing that St. Luke wrote the gospel, or that the heretics who were
common in the 2nd century accepted it's authority as well, or the extemsive
forensic evidence, or in other words there's more evidence to prove that St.
Luke wrote the gospel with his name, than for some other writers of the
modern age...
