Bible quote of the Day for Aug 17 (many that are first will be last, and the last first) |
Matthew 19:23-30
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be
hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell
you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than
for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples
heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be
saved?" 26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this
is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27 Then Peter
said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What
then shall we have?" 28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in
the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne,
you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the
twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one who has left houses or
brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my
name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30
But many that are first will be last, and the last first.
----------------------------
At the time people actually thought that the rich and privileged were
the closest to God. Well of course. All of the earthly wealth and good
things in their lives must be blessings from God. The poor, the lame,
the lepers, the blind-- they were the sinners.
But Jesus here surprises his followers and tells them that the rich
will find it hard to enter the kingdom. The disciples are "astonished"
by this and ask him, well then who can be saved? If not those who are
closest to God, then who? Jesus almost seems exasperated, and says
with God all things are possible.
Yet many of us still think this way. We think that when bad things
happen in our lives we are being punished, and when good things happen
we are being rewarded. But Jesus clearly refutes that here. The good
things have their place, but the bad things as well.
Difficult times can make us better people. When we go through
difficulty we can become more in tune with our spirits, closer to God,
with stronger and more compassionate spiritual hearts. Do not hate
your struggle, turn to Jesus and learn from him, you will find rest
for your soul, and you will go from last to first.

Perhaps, but it makes sense to me (but I'm psychotic, so go figure). The
necessary requirements for becoming 'rich' in material wealth are contrary
to getting oneself into Heaven. Avarice, gluttony, vanity, even envy. See?

Not lowering self esteem, but teaching humility. When one stoops to help the

HA HA HA HA HA!
What garbage.
Knowing the definition of humility, agreeing with it and actually
being it are two different things.
Superstition doesn't do anything for the 'lowest amongst us'.
(Except to keep them 'lowest')
What's wrong with materialism and pride?
The whole world runs on it. If it was so inherently destructive to
our species, why have we been doing it for a million years? The fabric
of our civilizations have been built on it.
Then along come the Johnny Come Lately christian, the life hating,
anti-human, we're better off dead religion that says we're all *****
and need to be 'saved' from being human. Oh.. and by the way, here's
how you can do it..... (insert mind death dogma here_____________)

The whole pagan argument makes no sense. I have no problem believing
people dreamed up pagan gods who said things like don't kill and
steal. So what?
The peoples who worshiped the pagan religions themselves dropped it
like a hot potato once they saw christianity. Why? Were they scholars
who were convinced by the scholarly evidence in support of the
divinity of Jesus? I doubt it. They beleived in a god in the first
place, and they recognized the powerful truth behind the christian
teachings about God. That is why paganism was dropped.
The most powerful proof in support of christianity is in the inherent
truth and power of the teachings themselves. It has proven itself over
and over again.

That might have something to do with its not an argument Homer, its
history. Unlike your myth, we have evidence for these occurrences. Now,
their gods, unlike yours, are better attested to, are still missing. Fancy
that.
people dreamed up pagan gods who said things like don't kill and

Good grief but you really are this stupid.
Consider that your heroes, the founders of the Torah, supposedly spent time
not only in Egypt, but the Courts of the Pharaoh of Egypt.
Where did they get the ides from. not your gods, that would have been El.
So we can find that the vaunted big ten was not original to the proto Jews.
Just another indication of a manufactured myth used to justify tribal
identity & history. Nothing rally new there, humans have done that for
centuries before the missing Exodus, & after.
The peoples who worshiped the pagan religions themselves dropped it
like a hot potato once they saw christianity. Why? Were they scholars
No they did not. But when the swords came out they were convinced.
You don't do history very much, & in the case of the xian myth, I can see
why. You might learn something you could not deny.

divinity of Jesus? I doubt it. They beleived in a god in the first

teachings about God. That is why paganism was dropped.
& is that is why it is reappearing where once it carried the death
sentence. Let's see, no Roman Emperor ever decreed the death penalty for
worshiping any other gods but the bleaters pantheon. No Roman citizen ever
lost life or property for believing in Jupiter. Interesting version of
history you have there Homer, is it home rolled?
The most powerful proof in support of christianity is in the inherent
truth and power of the teachings themselves. It has proven itself over
and over again.
Not really, but then, you are a bleater so are by demonstration, incapable
of coherent thought when your myth is involved. You are so shaky with it
you must try to defend it even when it does not need defense.
Truly, were your gods to exist they would need better representation that
those like you.
walksalone who hopes somebody saw more in the above than I did, just hot
air & begging & pleading based on zero evidence. Homer must be xian, or
like one of the sadder ones.

Strange...12 country bumpkins head out from Jerusalem one day, and shortly

Interesting theory. I'm not aware that "shortly thereafter" pagans did
convert in such great numbers that the stability of the empire was
threatened. What is the _evidence_ on which you base your claim?

You do not understand the point, which is not that _Paul_ used swords.
Paul converted a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of the pagan
population. The point is that paganism was finally conquered not by
logic or reason or love, but by savage butchery:
"[I]n late antiquity, both secular and ecclesiastical authorities
repeatedly destroyed unedifying texts, in well advertised ceremonies,
most obviously in sectarian disputes where rival claims for orthodoxy
were pitted against each other; whereupon one of them along with its
creeds and treatises would be declared heterodox by the other, and
measures would be taken to insure that no trace of it's existence
remained except, perhaps, what might be embedded in victorious
disproofs and rejoinders. Non-Christian writings came in for this
same treatment, that is, destruction in great bonfires at the center
of the town square. Copyists were discouraged from replacing them by
the threat of having their hands cut off."

The pagans were killed and banished from the whole of the Roman

pretend to drop your religion as well to avoid death, unless you get
off at the thoughts of being the latest, greatest martyr.
The truths and power of romanized Christian teachings are the fact
that they are based and focus on many people's foremost fear of death,
pain and suffering along with taking advantage of people's added
attributes of ignorance spawned by greed or desperation.
