Bible Quote of the Day for June 2 (He is not God of the dead, but of the living) |
Scripture: Mark 12:18-27
18 And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection;
and they asked him a question, saying, 19 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us
that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child,
the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.
20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died
left no children; 21 and the second took her, and died, leaving no
children; and the third likewise; 22 and the seven left no children.
Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection whose wife
will she be? For the seven had her as wife." 24 Jesus said to them,
"Is not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures
nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they
neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in
heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the
book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, `I
am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? 27
He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong."
----------------------------------------
Interesting how the sadducees and pharisees constantly tested jesus
with quotes from the old testament, always trying to trick him, or
catch him in some way, to prove he was a fraud. Not unlike the
atheists on these newsgroups. We see that this has been going on for
2000 years and jesus himself was the first to face it. But it was
always he who confounded them with his answers, and proved that it was
they who were the frauds and the liars. In the end, it was at leastly
partly their frustration at being exposed as the hypocrites and frauds
that they were, that lead them to kill him.
Jesus tells us very little about the next world, but what he does tell
us is important. We learn that marriage is a human institution and one
which does not exist in our life to come. But he also tells us how God
is the God of the living and not of the dead. There were some who
thought that at death we entered a period where we were dead, but then
we might later be resurrected.
But Jesus tells us that to be alive is to not die at all. We are alive
now, and at the end of our existence in the flesh, we will pass
seamlessly into the next world. If we accept the spirit we will not
die. Do not fear death. To fear death is a terrible thing. It causes
people to commit terrible crimes and do other rotten things. To
believe is to not fear death. They are one and the same. You can not
be a true believer and fear death.
It is the greatest promise that we are given, and reason enough to be
christian. It is the word of god. Believe and follow his very simple
teachings, and you will never die.

Why do you think he is 'sad'? By the way, *his* spelling and grammer are
exceptional.

He fucks up his capitalization fairly often, and uses one non-word, I
notice. Hardly exceptional. But then, I wouldn't expect a guy who can't
even spell "grammar" to know that. As for the rest of his comments:
Begins with an ad-hominem. Adds an irrelevance about marriage in
"heaven". And then resorts to appealing to fear of death. Just a
pathetic recruitment attempt. Have you ever wondered why, if your God
really wants us to believe in him, he only sends retards to sell us the
idea?

He doesn't send retards to "sell" you the idea. You are the retard.

not real hard to look good when you report the event decades after it
occured - even i could look smart :-)

funny how the "word" can be interpetred so differently by so many people -
has your god done this on purpose ? And how do you know you are right and

religous extremists do terrible things too - in the name of their god. Or

yep...seen quite a few news reports about people not afraid to die for

dream on matey - but it occurs to me *you* are the one that fears death -
your fairy tale provides you a fantasy escape from the inevitable.

I thought it was God, but it was only my dad. I thought it was Jesus,
but he was only a back-stabber. I pointed lo, hither and twain, "behold
the Beast!" ,said I, but it was only the darkness of my unconscious
mind. I pointed there, "behold, the Babylon *****!", but she was my own
perversions. I thought it was the devil, but it was my own
indifference. I thought it was Satan, but it was my own aggressions
turned against myself. I thought he was Lucifer, but it was my own
wishful thinking.

Why are you posting this to alt.atheism? We don't believe in Santa
Claus. We don't believe in the Easter Bunny. We don't believe in the
Tooth Fairy, ghosts, leprechauns, nor elves.
We don't believe your fairy tales either.
