Bid to Stop Mass. Gay Marriages Rejected |
Bid to Stop Mass. Gay Marriages Rejected
by JENNIFER PETER
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-4258800,00.html
BOSTON (AP) - A federal appeals court Tuesday rejected an attempt by
conservative groups and state lawmakers to stop gay marriage in
Massachusetts.
The Florida-based Liberty Counsel, which launched the lawsuit, said it
would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The plaintiffs had argued that Massachusetts' high court usurped the
power of the Legislature - and thereby violated the U.S. Constitution
- when it ruled last year that gay couples are entitled to wed.
The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed Tuesday, and said the
appropriate way to contest the state court ruling is by amending the
Massachusetts Constitution - a long process already under way.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Robert Largess, the vice president
of the Catholic Action League, and 11 state lawmakers.
The federal appeals court had rejected an earlier request by the
groups to stop the first marriage licenses from being issued to gay
couples in May.
Tuesday's ruling was the latest in a series of defeats for
conservative groups in both state and federal courts.
The appeals court said the November 2003 gay-marriage ruling by
Massachusetts' Supreme Judicial Court did not violate a clause in the
U.S. Constitution that calls for a republican form of government in
each state.
The only way a state could run afoul of the clause would be to
establish a monarchy or take other action that clearly deviated from
the republican form of government, the appeals court said.

But it's worse: It's a Catholic cult that launched the legal

Ah, coming from the moral high ground of a sexual abuse scandal...
Precisely. Our new bishop ("He isn't Bernie!") has made opposing gay
marriage Issue #1. (I assume the old Issue #1, abortion, has dropped to
the #2 slot.) The Catholic Church could try to build good will again by
working for the poor in Massachusetts, helping to reform urban schools,
alerting parishioners to human rights abuses around the world and
providing aid efforts (one of the few good things Bernard Cardinal Law did
do), but instead they just make a laughingstock of themselves by attacking
gays when they themselves have proven to be a haven for child molesters
and other sexual predators.
I flat cannot watch those people rattle on about morals. Not when they've
gone to such lengths to *protect molesters. It's not so much that the
church has had them. Any large organization is going to have some scum.
It's that they *protected them.
I wish every time one of them opened their mouths, I could hand them a
list of all the molestation cases with the comment "clean up your own damn
house first how 'bout?"

I know I'm probably jumping in here pretty late, but has it been mentioned
that the Vatican also officially opposes the death penalty and the
pre-emptive invasion of Iraq? I find it curious that individuals who support
those two issues are allowed to receive Communion unchallenged, though both
are completely at odds with a truly "pro-life" view-point.

The Vatican got in bed with the Southern Baptist Conference over the
abortion issue in the US. (They're not so concerned about non-white
countries--in fact, the Pope's infamous shill, Mother Teresa, seemed
utterly unconcerned about abortion in India, though she traveled the
world to admonish white Christians on the topic.)
The result is that you have these conservative Catholics who have more
in common with the SBC on ethics than the Pope, with the exception
that Catholics don't believe in divorce (unless they're rich and
powerful, ie, Kennedys).
Abortion is all they really care about; the current Pope is against
war (as a survivor of WWII), but look at where he spends his money.
Not on ending wars or helping war victims. On (white, Christian)
abortion.

Well, I was just curious as to whether that particular bit of hypocrisy had
been brought up. I just wonder if/when the theists who believe in doing the
right thing are going to get tired of invoking the "no true Scotsman" and
deal publicly with those who they claim are misrepresenting their faiths.
Unfortunately, due to the, unsurprising, declining moral and ethical climate
among the faithful, I doubt I'll live to see it.

What happened to the last half of that sentence? My parsing buffer
overloaded.
I'm sorry, we do not warrant syntax.
(Obviously, it was a secret EAC message that can only be decoded with your
rubber chicken. After all, the only alternative would be I wrote a
sentence so convoluted, it's giving me a headache trying to read it
myself.)

I've rather become accustomed to it.
