Object: Bill Maher on Fundies and The South
CALLER: Yes, do you think President Bush is sincere in supporting
Ariel Sharon's position, the government with denying the Palestinians
right of return or do you think this is just a ploy to get the Jewish
vote?
MAHER: I think this is all -- this has everything to do with the fact
that George Bush is a born-again Christian. OK, and this is why
religion is so dangerous in our society. Because George Bush is not
just a Christian. He's a born-again, they believe Jesus is coming back
any day now. And they want everything to be perfect for him. They call
it the rapture, right?
KING: Why is that bad?
MAHER: Well, Thomas Jefferson said the book of revelations was the
ravings of a lunatic. George Bush organizes his foreign policy around
it. That's why it's bad. Because his decisions about Israel are
affected by his religious beliefs.
KING: You mean that Christ is coming back Israel.
MAHER: Jesus is coming back, and he's not coming back to Toledo,
Larry, he's coming back to his home, which is Jerusalem, which has to
be in Jewish hands because the Jews have a very important role to play
when Jesus comes back, which is, of course, to be dead. Because there
can't be any Jews around.
KING: That's right, yes.
MAHER: I mean, this is scary stuff. Because it's completely
irrational. It's like half this country wants to guide our ship of
state by a compass. A compass, something that works by science and
rationality, and imperial wisdom. And half this country wants to kill
a chicken and read the entrails like they used to do in the old Roman
Empire. And I'm with the compass people.
.. . .
KING: Carbondale, Illinois.
CALLER: How do we get southern voters voting Democrat again? Thank
you, Bill. Thank you, Larry.
KING: Will the South ever vote Democratic?
MAHER: You know, that's a sore point with me, the south. The way that
they have the stranglehold over the electorate. Because, excuse me,
and I love playing to red states, because when I play the red states
my stand-up act I get all the people 40 don't usually have someone
like me come to their state. So there's a great bonding.
And I feel for them, because there's a lot of smart people in the
south. But in general, it is the dumbest part of the country. Excuse
me. It is. And also, they're the super patriots. The one part of the
country that ever actually seceded. The one part of the country that
ever actually committed treason. And they seem to lead in how we are
supposed to think. Because they're more religious, they're more
patriotic and I think it's just a disservice to our...
KING: You think in modern-day America you could still claim a whole
region is dumber than another region?
MAHER: They lead the region in dumbness, yes, they do. Because there's
just too many people who think that every problem can be solved by
either more guns or more Jesus. And like I said, I'm with the people
who are following the compass. Not the people who are reading the
entrails of the chicken. They're the people who are reading the
entrails of the chicken.

I think this theory of Maher's gives Bush too much credit. It assumes that
George even has the capacity to think that deeply and intellectually!
I'm not convinced of it. Why would Bush have so many jewish advisors on his
team if he is so "contemptful" of jewish people as a "born-again christian"?
George Bush has been cavorting with Ariel Sharon as well. In his "Christian"
end-of-the-world armageddon plan, the jews must "all be dead"? A little
far-fetched. And again, it would involve too much thinking, that Bush simply
wouldn't grasp.
I give Maher credit for going a step further than Michael Moore and his
movie "Fahrenheit 9/11". Moore's position is that the war "on terror" isn't
some global new-order conspiracy, but simply about making money. Moore
brings saudi-arabs into the equation and his movie. After all, that's
"safe-territory" to make arabs look like the bad guys. Anti-arabist comments
are socially acceptable in the U.S. But what he completely fails to mention
in his equation, is the jewish tribes and players.
So here you have Maher, bringing Jews into the equation - not entirely
overlooking and ignoring them as Moore did. His equation bad-mouths
Christians as the bad guys. Which again, it seems to be socially acceptable
to bad-mouth Christians. It's just that Maher, in his theory, is making the
jewish players out to be mere pawns in a game - innocent bystanders in a
Fundamentalist Christian Armageddon plan.
Mmmmmmh...nope. Bill Maher is close, closer to the truth than Michael Moore,
but no cigar.

That's Maher's opinion, and he has a right to it because of
"super patriots" who beat out guys like Hitler for political
influence. Maher's bosses have a social agenda, which is why the media
is run the way the media is run. That is undeniable if you want to
maintain at least an appearance of honesty. The fact is, there is not
much logic to the way the people who write his checks would like to
see things be either, and the people who according to Maher are "the
ones reading the chicken's entrails" are in fact just people who
believe that there is such a thing as right and wrong, and to whom it
matters. If he doesn't like it, then he should go to a country where

dispensationalists absolutely do believe that a sign of the end

before Jesus can come again.
Such beliefs, if held by Bush, could have helped motivate him in

I would like to know how accurate the following part is:
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God."
(Matthew 5:9)
*Dispensationalism discourages human efforts to achieve peace, and
teaches that we are living in an epoch in which an increase of war and
famine are inevitable."
I don't really like the sound of that.

play when Jesus comes back, which is, of course, to be dead. Because
there can't be any Jews around.

That is an outright lie. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that
the Jewish race will be destroyed, that God wants it to be, or any
such thing. READ it before you criticize it, idiot. I'm not even a
practicing Christian and I know it doesn't say that. What's your
excuse?

Nowhere in that quote did Maher say that the Bible says that God wants the
Jewish race to be destroyed.. I'd tell you to read what he said before you
criticise it, idiot, but you did read what he said ("Jews have a very
important role to play when Jesus comes back, which is, of course, to be
dead" - not that God *wants* them to be destroyed) and yet you chose to put
words in his mouth *even after quoting him as proof that he didn't say
that*.

Faithless people do not believe they will have a higher power
to answer to for their actions. If you know anything about human
nature, then you know how much safer it would be to have someone who
acknowledges that there is a God as a head of state than one who
doesn't.

roflmao!!!! leaders should have to answer to their followers for their
actions, not some god that not every follower believes exists. That's what
we call a democratic society, and it works just fine without someone
claiming that an invisible sky fairie is behind it all. You may not be
strong enough to be a good person without believing that a higher power is
forcing you to be, but don't make the mistake of thinking that everyone is
that weak.

Because
there's just too many people who think that every problem can be
solved by either more guns or more Jesus. And like I said, I'm with
the people who are following the compass. Not the people who are
reading the entrails of the chicken. They're the people who are
reading the entrails of the chicken.

That's Maher's opinion, and he has a right to it because of
"super patriots" who beat out guys like Hitler for political
influence. Maher's bosses have a social agenda, which is why the media
is run the way the media is run. That is undeniable if you want to
maintain at least an appearance of honesty. The fact is, there is not
much logic to the way the people who write his checks would like to
see things be either, and the people who according to Maher are "the
ones reading the chicken's entrails" are in fact just people who
believe that there is such a thing as right and wrong, and to whom it
matters. If he doesn't like it, then he should go to a country where
he thinks the people are "smart", like say ... France?

And the chicken entrails are the best way to determine right and wrong?
Here's a clue; the people reading the compass believe in right and wrong
too, they just differ on how one arrives at such conclusions. Luckily, the
compass will point them in the right way 100% of the time, unlike the
chicken entrails......

MAHER: I think this is all -- this has everything to do with the fact
that George Bush is a born-again Christian. OK, and this is why
religion is so dangerous in our society. Because George Bush is not
just a Christian. He's a born-again, they believe Jesus is coming
back any day now. And they want everything to be perfect for him.
They call it the rapture, right?

That's *****. It just show's Maher's ignorance. The
Christians I know don't believe they have to "prepare" anything here
for Jesus to return. They know that is not what the Bible says. If
Bush leads people to believe that he sent forces to the Middle East to
"prepare" the way for the return of Christ, than he's stupid for
thinking people will believe him, or for long, and you're awfully
stupid if you think that it isn't for oil, etc.

The average person in not in a position to make such preparations. Also, one
might argue that you're awfully stupid if you don't understand that there
can be multiple causes for an action.

KING: Why is that bad?

MAHER: Well, Thomas Jefferson said the book of revelations was the
ravings of a lunatic. George Bush organizes his foreign policy around
it. That's why it's bad. Because his decisions about Israel are
affected by his religious beliefs.

It's funny that Maher doesn't quote the founding fathers whose
opinions he does not like so much. I think there ought to be equality
in tv soundbites. If you're gonna quote the founding fathers when
referring to the beliefs of others as nutty, then you ought to have to
justify the beliefs of your's that others think are nutty with quotes
from the founding fathers. Of course, Maher probably doesn't know
enough of them to stay entertaining for more than 10 minutes, but
that's okay; his show was rarely entertaining beyond that anyway.

lol, that's prettyu flimsy. No one asked maher about his own beliefs, hwe
was answering a direct question put to him about another person's beliefs.
If the best you can do is get mad when someone stays on topic then you don't
have a lot to complain about.

hehe, ok, so a compass works *most* of the time and when it doesn't work we
can verify the circumstances behind the change in veracity. Do you know why
your chicken entrail reading failed you last time you tried it? :-)

Bush is an admitted born-again Christian, and there is plenty of evidence to
document how born again Christians think. If you subscribe to a particular
ideology, doesn't it go without saying that you adhere to the principles
contained within that doctrine? Do you think one could be a born again, or a
communist, or a klu klux klan member, or zionist without having those ideas
affect your policy decisions?
