Bishop defends anti-gay remarks |
This is a man who doesn't mince his words. He is correct that he is
owed an apology.
http://calgary.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=ca-human-rights-bishop20050331
CALGARY - Bishop Fred Henry is refusing to take back comments he made
comparing homosexuality to prostitution and adultery, after two people
lodged human rights complaints against him.
"I stand by the letter, I wouldn't change one comma," the Calgary
Catholic bishop said Wednesday, adding he has the right of free speech
to express his opinion on the subject. "Why should I apologize? I think
I'm owed an apology for putting me through this rigmarole of
harassment, intimidation and attempt to silence me."
In January, in a letter read to congregations in southern Alberta,
Henry called on the government to suppress homosexual and other
behaviour he considers harmful to the family.
"Since homosexuality, adultery, prostitution and pornography undermine
the foundations of the family, the basis of society, then the state
must use its coercive power to proscribe or curtail them in the
interests of the common good," Henry said in the letter.

One bigot coming to the defense of another.
How...not surprising.

Wrong.
If that is the standard, then the rest of us should be equally free to
call Christians a group of witch burners, scam artists, fonicators
(remember the TV preacher scandals), child molesters (the Catholic
priest problem), torturers (remember the Spanish Inquisition), etc.
Is that the type of dialog you people want?
You should keep in mind that prostitution and adultery are small
potatoes compared to the crimes organized religions have committed
against humanity in the past.
BTW, if a Catholic bishop is behaving this way, he should be
reprimanded by his church to the extend that he is acting in any
official capacity. Failure to issue such a reprimand will mean it is
legitimately open season on Catholics regarding what people say in
public about their religion.

The real problem is that the bishop advocated using the power of the
state to impose his chosen religious beliefs on all of the citizens of
Canada contrary to S2[a] of The Charter. I doubt that anyone can expect
an apology for advocating an illegal act!

[The answer is, kids, about "undermining the foundations of
the family", is 1) definitely no; 2) definitely no (especially
if he defines polygamy as "adultery", even if not, some
cultures did allow extramaritial affairs); 3) ditto, for
same reasons as #2, prostitution is just sex with money
exchanging hands; 4) no.]

Well, at least he's upfront about admitting that conservatives
are eager to use the coercive power of the state, about being
big-government fans. Most conservatives are coy about that.

And, all the people from other countries knocking the US can
