Object: Bizarro World's answer to Wilhelm Reich?

Bad science? It's OK—just put him in charge of women's health

-- by PZ Myers

Clearly, Bush is not going to drift quietly into oblivion. Majikthise and Feministing report that his administration is appointing a certifiable kook to run the federal program that oversees family planning and reproductive health. His qualifications seem to be that he's fanatical about abstinence, to the point of making stuff up.

At the Annual Abstinence Leadership Conference in Kansas, Keroack defended abstinence (in an aptly titled talk, "If I Only Had a Brain") by claiming that sex causes people to go through oxytocin withdrawal which in turn prevents people from bonding in relationships. Seriously.

[Keroack] explained that oxytocin is released during positive social interaction, massage, hugs, "trust" encounters, and sexual intercourse. "It promotes bonding by reducing fear and anxiety in social settings, increasing trust and trustworthiness, reducing stress and pain, and decreasing social aggression," he said.

But apparently if you've had sex with too many people you use up all that oxytocin: "People who have misused their sexual faculty and become bonded to multiple persons will diminish the power of oxytocin to maintain a permanent bond with an individual." Hear that? Too many sexual partners and you'll never love again!

I object to characterizing Reich as a pseudoscientist. He was a 20th
century Galileo literally martyred by the CON for threatening to put
the AMA & drug companies out of the cancer treatment business (and it
is indeed BIG BUSINESS these days, more than ever) by discovering a
cheap cure using free energy. He also identified UFO's as the enemies
of man and successfully shot them out of the sky with his cloudbusters,
which he had initially developed to end droughts. For that he was sent
to prison and his books banned & burned by the US government in the
50s. Not Nazi Germany in the 30s, but the USA in the 50s. For those
interested in a full account of a fascinating, if horrible, life of
Reich I recommend the book "Fury On Earth".

Martyred? Yes.
Galileo? Not if you're talking about the famous one.
And I didn't actually characterize Reich as a pseudoscientist in the
above post. I'd be quite willing to in future, but my point here was
just that this administration appointee seemed to be following the
broad outline of Reich's notions, adding some harebrained stuff of his
own, and then coming to almost the opposite conclusions.
And I doubt Patti Smith or Kate Bush will ever write songs about him.

I've got this paper I've been writing that proves how the shapes of
the jaws of negroes and jews shows they were evolved to eat christian
babies. Can someone tell me how to go about getting appointed to
public office? My ideas are mostly based on the science of
flengologistologianistia, which is knowledge based on smelling my own
farts. We don't need to get into all the theory though, the
conclusions are what matter.

The people knew that Mulla Nasarudin was generally intolerant of preachers and lecturers, so they asked him to give a sermon. He climbed into the pulpit and said: "Do you know what I am going to speak about?"
"No," everybody answered.
"If you are so ignorant, I am not going to waste time speaking to you," Nasarudin said and climbed down from the pulpit.
The following day he put the same question to them. This time everyone's answer was, "Yes, we know."
"If you know," Nasarudin replied, "then what am I here for?" And he left the mosque.
The third day, to the same question, half of the worshipers said, "We know," while the other half said, "We don't know."
So Nasarudin responded: "Let those who know tell those who don't."

I agree that death is the culmination of the sex act (now,
make room for your progeny). But such death is good for
life in the "continuation of the species" sense, even if it
is not good in the "individuals living forever" sense.
