There is a big difference between "leftist" and communist.
I was about to say the difference is like that between Bush's government
and fascism, but that would have been a big misstep because Bush's
government _is_ fascist.

Why Morales? Well it might have something to do with Bectel. Remember
they owned all the water in the country. All of it. Even what was
collected privately in buckets under roof eves. The cost? About 1/4 of
average Bolivian wages. So Bectel reprocessed many homes and farms
from those who couldn't pay. Bectel shareholders grew rich as
Bolivians were made homeless. I wonder why the Bolivians were pissed
off enough to elect Morales?

Same in Peru where Peru's gas was sold off by
corrupt politicians to outside multinationals
leaving little to Peruvians.
This is a massive issue there with many Peruvians.
Venezuela. Many corrupt politicians of the past
grew rich selling sweatheart oil deals to oil
companies.
Brazil and Argentina. The US has signed deals with these nations
it has cheated on and played gmes with for deacdes, cheating these
nations for benefit of US corporations.
The intelligensia of course is quite familar with things
like United Fruit and overthrow of people like Guzman
and Allende at behest of big business. This is now
just as well known at lower levels of South America
and Central American populations.
You can cheat people only so long.
I suspect that era is now coming to a distinct
and hurried close.
It makes our homegrown far right assholes mewl and
whine how unfair it all is, but so what.
Thowing around the word's communism and socialism
won't stop the end of outrages that have dragged
down South America for deceades now.
CIA type destabilization campaigns are no longer
workable either, witness Venezuela.
