Supreme Court hears 'Bong Hits 4 Jesus' case
Justices show no clear consensus on free speech vs. school limits
WASHINGTON - A high school senior's 14-foot banner proclaiming "Bong Hits 4
Jesus" gave the Supreme Court a provocative prop for a lively argument
Monday about the extent of schools' control over student speech.
If the justices conclude Joseph Frederick's homemade sign was a pro-drug
message, they are likely to side with principal Deborah Morse. She suspended
Frederick in 2002 when he unfurled the banner across the street from the
school in Juneau, Alaska.
"I thought we wanted our schools to teach something, including something
besides just basic elements, including the character formation and not to
use drugs," Chief Justice John Roberts said Monday.

WRONG. The Constitution and its First Amendment demand that that freedom
of speech be upheld.
Christians are always trying to stifle free speech. Yet religion is the
farthest thing from morality, and it certainly knows little of "common
sense," unless you mean the reasoning of the uneducated masses.

That is an utterly retarded argument. Character formation includes
learning that you cannot punish people for their non-threatening
*speech* no matter how much you dislike their views.
To equate punishing kids for expressing pro-drug views (if that's even
what happened) with teaching kids not to use drugs is utterly absurd.
In fact, it's totally anti-American.

That's funny. From my perspective, I would say that common sense,
morality, and good taste demands that the SCOTUS rules in favor of the
student, and his right to free speech.
I case you are interested, 'bongs' are used in some cultures by priests to
smoke 'medicinal' plants that help them get closer to their gods.
