Ex-teacher convicted, given prison sentence

A former teacher at Faith Baptist School in Spotsylvania County was
sentenced yesterday to serve five years in prison for sexual offenses
with a student.
Daniel Eric Shipp, 29 now and 26 at the time of the offenses in the
spring of 2003, pleaded guilty yesterday in Spotsylvania Circuit Court
to two counts of indecent liberties by a person in a supervisory
relationship.
He got 10 years total, but five years of the sentence was suspended.
He'll be required to register as a Virginia sex offender and will be
forbidden to have any contact with the female student or her family
for 10 years.
The girl was 14 when the offenses occurred between May and June of
2003, said Spotsylvania prosecutor Matt Lowery. She is now 17. Lowery
said Shipp taught the girl in school.
According to the written plea agreement, Shipp befriended the girl and
enticed her into a relationship that involved sexual touching.
Lowery said the activity occurred both inside and outside the Plank
Road school. It ended when Shipp resigned after the 2002-03 school
year and moved to Indianapolis.
The girl informed authorities about the activity after Shipp left
Spotsylvania. Shipp was already in custody for a different offense in
Indiana when Spotsylvania officials had him extradited to Virginia
last year, Lowery said.
Don Forrester--pastor at Faith Baptist Church, of which the school is
a ministry--said Shipp taught high school history there during the
2001-02 and 2002-03 academic years. He said the church was "completely
unaware" of Shipp's actions until after he left Faith Baptist.
"We are absolutely shocked and appalled at Mr. Dan Shipp's conduct,"
Forrester said yesterday. "The church would certainly never condone
such behavior."
