Msgr. pleads guilty to grand larceny charges

Msgr. John Woolsey, dubbed Father Flim Flam by The News, leaves court
after pleading guilty to grand larceny charges.
A Manhattan monsignor admitted yesterday he stole thousands of dollars
from his upper East Side church coffers to support a lavish lifestyle
of fancy watches, fine dining and European golfing trips.
Msgr. John Woolsey, 68, who yesterday formally resigned as pastor of
St. John the Martyr church on E. 72nd St., faces up to five years in
prison and could be ordered to pay back nearly $1 million when
sentenced Sept. 22.
His lawyer blamed his troubles on a "psychological condition" that
will be discussed at sentencing.
Prosecutors contend he transferred nearly $837,000 from church
accounts to his personal Citibank account and to pay his American
Express bill. Parishioners said they gave Woolsey donations ranging
from $10,000 to $500,000, according to court records.
Woolsey, who pleaded guilty to grand larceny yesterday, spent his
booty on cosmetic dentistry, golfing trips to Europe, and Breitling
and Rolex watches - even as the parish was cutting back on services to
the homeless, prosecutors charged.
"The defendant has committed a crime of greed, manipulation and
opportunism," Assistant District Attorney Matthew Amatruda told
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Bruce Allen. "He abused his position
of trust."
Woolsey, who smiled as he stood before the judge, said he has already
paid back $100,000.
His lawyer, Nicholas DeFeis, maintains that Woolsey stole far less
than prosecutors claim. His guilty plea only required him to say he
took more than $50,000. It will be up to the judge to decide how much
he should pay back.
"While I believe that I was entitled to spend some of this money on
myself," Woolsey told the judge, "I recognize that the amount I spent
on myself exceeded any lawful entitlement."
Woolsey, who was wearing a dark jacket and black mock turtleneck, was
apologetic.
"Much to my chagrin and sorrow," he said in a statement handed out by
his lawyer, "I failed in my responsibility to properly administer the
finances of the parish. Indeed, I took the liberty of spending on
myself more money than I was entitled to."
He asked for the prayers and forgiveness of his former parishioners -
some of whom took the filching in stride yesterday.
"You give money to the church and you hope it goes to good causes,"
said Adoracion Cobo, 58, standing outside St. John the Martyr parish.
"I come to church because of God. To me, priests are human beings. I
guess they make mistakes like everybody else."
The guilty plea is "a sad but necessary step towards healing for the
parishioners," said Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling.

How flimflam case unfolded
Manhattan prosecutors began investigating Msgr. John Woolsey at the
request of the Archdiocese of New York after a relative of a deceased
parishioner claimed he fleeced her out of nearly a half-million
dollars.
The lawsuit that touched off Woolsey's troubles claimed he finagled
$490,000 from St. John the Martyr parishioner Rose Cale, 88, who died
in 2003, using the money to live the high life and buy a Jersey shore
condo.
Aside from bilking her of cash and stock, Woolsey at one point was
named sole beneficiary of Cale's estate, according to the suit, filed
in 2004.
He argued that she gave him the money freely, including the $100,000
to buy the condo, which he later sold for a $167,000 profit.
After news of the lawsuit broke, the archdiocese began checking the
books at St. John's. It discovered that $1.3million was missing, and
asked Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau to investigate.
Woolsey was arrested in the summer of 2005.
Last year the archdiocese filed a lawsuit against Travelers Casualty
and Surety Co., from which it purchased a $5 million lawsuit to
protect itself against employee theft. The suit is seeking $1.3
million.
Travelers then filed an action against Woolsey, saying that if anyone
should reimburse the archdiocese, it is him.
The Cale and the insurance lawsuits are still pending in Manhattan
Supreme Court.
