KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- 6 News is learning more Thursday about a former
youth minister who's awaiting sentencing for child sex crimes.
Bryan Milam, 30, pleaded guilty Monday to sexually assaulting his
wife's niece and another young girl while they spent the night at his
home three years ago.
6 News confirmed that in the last five years, Milam has worked
full-time for at least four area churches, plus he gave presentations
at Knox County middle schools on abstinence.
Milam was employed at Faith Community Church on Strawberry Plains Pike
but the current pastor would not provide the dates of Milam's
employment.
In 2002, Milam moved to Circle Assembly of God on Rutledge Pike. The
pastor there tells 6 News Milam was asked to resign but he would not
say why.
Milam worked at Farragut Fellowship Assembly of God on Campbell
Station Road for nine months in 2003-2004. The pastor says Milam left
the church on good terms.
Milam was just fired from Talbott Church of God in Hamblem County
after his guilty plea this week.
Milam's attorney, Jonathon Cooper, says, "It's important to understand
that none of the allegations pertain to his duties as a youth pastor.
There's no allegations that anything happened at church, at a church
function or anything on church premises."
Cooper explains his client only plead guilty to sexual assault to keep
his family from going through a long and painful trial. And striking a
deal allowed Milam to put the sex allegations to rest for good.
"The prosecutor assured us that the state had no desire to make any
further investigation on any other allegation," Cooper says.
None of the pastors at Bryan Milam's former churches wanted to speak
on camera but his attorney says there were countless people prepared
to testify on his behalf.
One minister did provide a statement. S.C. Kirkendall, Pastor at
Farragut Fellowship Church, said, "While he was youth pastor here, he
did a wonderful job with our youth group and our youth group
flourished under his leadership. I know Bryan struggled with pleading
guilty to these charges because he believes he is innocent, but did
not want to, in a public trial, drag his family and ministry through
this."
Milam will be sentenced in June. He's expected to get six years
probation. Then he'll have 48 hours to register as a sex offender and
he'll never be able to work as a youth minister again.
