Object: Book Review: 'As a man Thinketh' by James Allen
A small but invaluable book of approximately 67 pages that can change
your life by drawing your attention to your thoughts and how these
thoughts manifest themselves in the expression of your life.
A few quotes from James Allen will give you a flavor of the book.
"The aphorism, 'As a man thinketh in his heart so is he,' (Proverbs
23:7) not only describes a man's inner character, but is so
comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of
his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the
complete sum of all his thoughts....As he thinks, so is he;. as he
continues to think, so he remains"
"Man is made or unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges
the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools
with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength
and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought, man
ascends to the divine perfection. By the abuse and wrong application of
thought he descends below the level of the beast. Between these two
extremes are all the grades of character, and man is their maker and
master."
"A man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently
cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected,
it must, and will bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then
an abundance of useless weed-seeds will fall therein, and will continue
to produce their kind."
"Every thought-seed sown or allowed to fall into the mind, and to take
root there, produces its own, blossoming sooner or later into act, and
bearing its own fruitage of opportunity and circumstance. Good thoughts
bear good fruit, bad thoughts bad fruit."
"Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results; bad thoughts
and actions can never produce good results. This is but saying that
nothing can come from corn but corn, nothing from nettles but nettles.
Men understand this law in the natural world, and work with it; but few
understand it in the mental and moral world/"
"The body is the servant of the mind. It obeys the operations of the
mind, whether they be deliberately chosen or automatically expressed.
At the bidding of unlawful thoughts the body sinks rapidly into disease
and decay; at the command of glad and beautiful thoughts it becomes
clothed with youthfulness and beauty. Disease and health, like
circumstances, are rooted in thought. Sickly thoughts will express
themselves through a sickly body."
"Hateful and condemnatory thoughts crystallize into habits of
accusation and violence, which solidify into circumstances of injury
and persecution."
" Thoughts are the very portals of heaven; and to dwell day by day in
thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to
their possessor."
"Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to
improve themselves; they therefore remain bound."
"Our life is what our thoughts make it. A man will find that as he
alters his thoughts toward things and other people, things and other
people will alter towards him."
"Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. It is the
result of long and patient effort in self-control. Its presence is an
indication of ripened experience, and of a more than ordinary knowledge
of the laws and operations of thought."
"A man becomes calm in the measure that he understands himself as a
thought evolved being, for such knowledge necessitates the
understanding of others as the result of thought, and as he develops a
right understanding, and sees more and more clearly the internal
relations of things by the action of cause and effect he ceases to fuss
and fume and worry and grieve, and remains poised, steadfast, serene."
"That exquisite poise of character, which we call serenity is the last
lesson of culture, the fruitage of the soul. It is precious as wisdom,
more to be desired than gold - yea, than even fine gold. How
insignificant mere money seeking looks in comparison with a serene life
- a life that dwells in the ocean of Truth, beneath the waves, beyond
the reach of tempests, in the Eternal Calm!"

Hi Mark and thanks for your reply.
This is the problem with defiance based, mind manacled atheist - they
think being at peace and sharing this peace with others is off topic.
Such is the tragedy that manifests itself as alt.atehism.
Plenty of profane and useless stuff posted here to destroy others
peace.
But when one offers tools to be at peace it is off topic.
The business of humanism is 'all our business' if we with to live life
at peace.
I suggest you read the 'informal creed' of atheism that discusses this
topic.
(Snip)
"An Atheist loves his fellow man instead of god. An Atheist believes
that heaven is something for which we should work now - here on earth
for all men together to enjoy."
You can't even look towards the senior members at alt.atheism for
guidance.
You have been here for a number of years Mark and are bankrupt with
this subject of inner peace.
Michelle who has been here for 12 years can offer no guidance either,
as she is not at peace herself. She does not even speak up to guide
others in right speech and right actions.
No, my friend developing inner peace is most certainly ON TOPIC at
alt.atheism.
I suggest you read 'As A. Man Thinketh' today and adopt the 'religion
of humanity' Mark.
Take that first step in the opposite direction you have been going in
for so long and be an atheist that promotes well-being and inner peace
for all.

A quote on finding peace from Thich Nhat Hanh
"There is no way to peace, peace is the way. This means that we can
realize peace right here in the present moment with our look, our
smile, our words and our actions. Peace work in not a means, each step
we take should be peace. Every step we take should be joy. Every step
we take should be happiness. Are you massaging Mother Earth every time
your foot touches her? Are you planting seeds of joy and peace?
Enlightenment, peace and joy will not be granted by someone else. The
well is within us and if we dig deeply in the present moment the water
will spring forth. If we are determined, we can do it. We don't need
the future. We can smile, breath fully and relax Everything we want is
here in the present moment. Peace is every step. Shall we continue our
journey?"
Take care,

To be fair, all AOLers use an AOL proxy. It's the nature of the system AOL
has. It gives the Wikipedia headaches in trying to block vandals since you
can't block an IP coming out of AOL as it's shared. In fact, I understand
that you can be passed between proxies within the same web session. Maybe
even between each HTTP request.
Which is going to make online banking from AOL a headache. A lot of banks
are starting to track your IP and if you come in on one it hasn't seen
before, you get challenged...

A man is literally what he thinks? If a man thinks he's Napoleon that
that means he is literally Napoleon? James Allen is out to lunch.

"Man is made or unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges
the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools
with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength
and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought, man

James Allen has no idea what happens in the afterlife. And it's
interesting that in this paragraph he is separating man (not woman?)
from "the beasts," as if humans aren't animals. And further down he
says "...thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding
peace to their possessor." How can this "man" be such a complete snob
towards nature on one hand and think lovely thoughts about nature on
the other?
James Allen is out to lunch.

Oh great, farming analogies.
"A man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be sewn with the
feces order to make it grow, but beware the feces of the male bovine,
for it is not useful and may germinate seeds that causeth the mind to
hallucinate about it's own self-inportance, and to spew forth upon that
subject."

"Every thought-seed sown or allowed to fall into the mind, and to take
root there, produces its own, blossoming sooner or later into act, and
bearing its own fruitage of opportunity and circumstance. Good thoughts
bear good fruit, bad thoughts bad fruit."

Thought-seed? Really? V, you seem addicted to bad writing more than
alcohol. I can see this James Allen is one of your biggest influencese
because you have copied his language. Jackie Collins is a better writer
than this.

Tell that to OJ SImpson.

And here you claim to be agnostic, yet you keep offering these
Christian tracts.
Prove there's a heaven.

"Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to
improve themselves; they therefore remain bound."

James Allen sounds about as arrogant as you do, and like you, has
nothing to be arrogant about.

"Our life is what our thoughts make it. A man will find that as he
alters his thoughts toward things and other people, things and other
people will alter towards him."

I presume that it is your default position to detest other people. Why
don't you try practicing what you preach?

THE FRUITAGE OF THE SOUL????? HHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!
V, you need a new hero. The one you've got offers trite observations at
best, is simply confused at other times, is deadly boring, and his
writing is so bad it's in the unintentionally funny Creative Writing
101 category. Move on.
