Object: Born Again Through Stem Cells, Therapeutic Cloning & Medicine
Perhaps one of the reasons that fundamentalist theocrats are so desperate
to block the development of embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic
cloning is because they realize that one more of their cherished
religious metaphors is in danger of being usurped. These people
fancifully refer to themselves as being "born again" in some mystical
sense. However, the prospects of stem cell and cloning research are
nothing short of enabling the continuous physical rebirth of ailing parts
of the human body. Just about any part of the body that starts to
deteriorate, in theory, could be replaced by young, new, healthy cells
cultured. Yet again, the fanciful metaphor of rebirth invoked by
religion would be pre-empted by the reality of medical science, which has
produced more "miracles" than all the faith healing phonies in history.
Already, religious obstructionists have blocked promising lines of fetal
research and therapeutic cloning for decades. Without their dogged
opposition in the halls of government, we might have already produced
cures for some of the most dreaded diseases that mankind has known
perhaps even enjoy perpetual health and vitality. Many people have died
slow and painful deaths, sacrificed on the altar of fundamentalist fear
and loathing of science and progress. These people who claim to be "pro-
life" are actually responsible for deaths and suffering of millions who
might have been helped, if not for fanatic religious ideologies holding
so much sway over the direction of society and the allocation of
resources to scientific research.
What I would like to see, particularly in the US, now that some of the
evangelical know-nothings have been driven from congress, is the creation
of federal bond initiatives, similar to ones passed by states like
California, which allocated resources to national laboratories for
biotechnology and medical research. We need a war on disease, including
the mind disease of fundamentalist religion, which has fought most
medical advances every step of the way. Even now, these myopic
extremists oppose vaccinating their own daughters, on religious grounds,
with the newly developed HPV vaccine, which can prevent cervical cancer.
I say that the government should make this vaccine widely available and
that any parent who refuses to have his or her daughter vaccinated should
be automatically held liable for child abuse, if she later contracts
cervical cancer. I say that any Jehovah's Witness parent who refuses
blood transfusions for their children who be incarcerated for
manslaughter, if that child later dies. We very much need a new
direction in the US and in world which parts company from the stone-age
mythology of superstition and religion. People are still free to believe
any crazy religious ***** they wish, so long as the act of belief
stays a mental one exclusively. But when they act on those beliefs in
ways that harm other people, then the rest of thinking humanity is right
to defend itself from them. I am hopeful that the time for putting up
with the consequences of theist stupidity is rapidly drawing to a close
and that, in particular, the death cults of judeo-xianity and islam will
be vigorously reigned in. That way, it would not just be people but
society that was rejuvenated and born-again, this time in a much more
positive and promising way.

Hear! Hear! Imagine what the billions spent for Iraq could have done
for medical research!

I agree; religious beliefs should not be allowed to interfere with
physical protection of a child.

I say that any Jehovah's Witness parent who refuses

Continued agreement.

This theist isn't stupid, and agrees with all you have stated. If you
removed the "religious" parts of the entire statement...and maybe the
political too...you have something that could be sent to every member
of Congress. War on Disease..... the drug manufacturers lobby would be
behind it... the AMA might not....all lobbies for diseases would (like
the Reeve's foundation).... MJ Fox would (and a darn good spokesman)...
I am not knowledgeable enough about the internet to know, but can't
websites be created with a petition or letter to be signed and
forwarded to Congresspeople?

Try the following site. They have many petitions to sign on a wide
variety of subjects. They are forwarded to your Congress persons. Do a
search at the top of the page for "stem cell" or any other topic in
which you might be interested. They are only form Emails, but I do get
responses from my senators and my representative.

Thank you, johac. I clicked the link and went to the site immediately.
One quick scan and I put it in my favorites as I know I have to plan
to spend some time there. Saw just on the home site quite a few I want
to sign.
